studying the legal frame of reference governing women construction labourers and its<br />

relevance; and<br />

●<br />

suggesting measures for improving their existing conditions.<br />

12.21 The study would cover the States of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. It proposes to<br />

interview a total sample size of 4,500 respondents consisting of construction labourers, contractors,<br />

experts, policy makers, government officers and representatives of non-governmental<br />

organizations. The methodology for the above study including the research tools for data collection<br />

have been finalized in collaboration with the <strong>Commission</strong>. The study has been initiated by Sarojini<br />

Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies and it is in full swing.<br />

F] Research Study on Domestic Violence against Women in<br />

India : Nature, Causes and Response of Criminal Justice<br />

System<br />

12.22 The <strong>Commission</strong> approved financial assistance for a research study on “Domestic Violence<br />

Against Women in India: Nature, Causes and Response of Criminal Justice System” submitted<br />

by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel <strong>National</strong> Police Academy, Hyderabad.<br />

12.23 The objectives of the research project are to study the:-<br />

nature of domestic violence against women in the country;<br />

●<br />

extent and types of violence committed against women by family members;<br />

●<br />

causes of domestic violence in the country;<br />

●<br />

entrenched attitudes and stereotypes held by people which lead to domestic violence;<br />

●<br />

attitudes and stereotypes held by police personnel of various ranks about domestic violence,<br />

which make them to react to instances of domestic violence in a specified manner;<br />

●<br />

effectiveness of the legal provisions regarding domestic violence; and<br />

●<br />

recommend suitable interventions for reducing the incidence of domestic violence on the<br />

basis of the findings of the study.<br />

12.24 The Academy submitted the draft report of the research study on 22-03-2005. At the<br />

time of writing this report, the draft report was being examined by the Secretariat of<br />

the <strong>Commission</strong>.<br />
