Sampling for selection of sample families for the study.<br />

and NGOs to verify the primary data.<br />

12.29 The final report of the Study is expected to be submitted to the <strong>Commission</strong> shortly.<br />
I] Action Research Project on ‘Land, Labour and <strong>Human</strong><br />
<strong>Rights</strong> Violation in Bundelkhand and Sonbhadra Region<br />
of Uttar Pradesh’<br />
12.30 The <strong>Commission</strong> in August 2004 entrusted to Dr. K. Gopal Iyer, a retired Professor in<br />
Sociology from Punjab University, Chandigarh to undertake the action research project on ‘Land,<br />
Labour and <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> Violation in Bundelkhand and Sonbhadra Region of Uttar Pradesh’.<br />
For this action research, the <strong>Commission</strong> agreed to provide financial assistance of<br />
Rs.6,92,000/-. The main aim of the action research is to understand in depth the intensity of violations<br />
of legal, labour and other human rights of the people in Bundelkhand and Sonbhadra region,<br />
thereby evolving an action strategy for taking remedial measures. The focus is to improve the<br />
overall basic conditions of the vulnerable sections in the region, especially dalits, tribals and women.<br />
The duration of the project is 24 months. The project is in progress and the same is being monitored.<br />
J] A Study of the Status of Tendu Leaf Pluckers in Orissa<br />
12.31 The <strong>Commission</strong> has entrusted the above research study to <strong>Human</strong> Development Society,<br />
which is based in New Delhi. The objectives of the project are as under :-<br />

Find out the socio-economic background of the tendu leaf pluckers;<br />
●<br />
Analyze the dynamics of the tendu leaf trade - the role of different actors, the process and<br />
the economics of the trade;<br />
●<br />
Examine the extent of bonded labour system in tendu leaf trade - relationship between the<br />
pluckers and their employers, wages, working conditions etc. in the light of various statutory<br />
provisions and guidelines and orders of the Supreme Court, NHRC, etc.<br />

Examine the extent of child labour in tendu leaf trade;<br />
