Early Childhood Care and Edu<strong>ca</strong>tion<br />

ECCE 195 Block Practicum I<br />

This course provides the learner with practi<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

experience in an early childhood centre. Students<br />

integrate learning and demonstrate skills in interpersonal<br />

communi<strong>ca</strong>tion, observing and recording<br />

childrenís responses and abilities, program planning,<br />

guiding and <strong>ca</strong>ring and growing professional<br />

awareness. Seminars are scheduled for reflective<br />

discussion of practicum learning.<br />

ENGL 110 <strong>College</strong> Composition<br />

Students needing a year of Introductory English<br />

may choose to take English 110/111 or English<br />

112/114. English 112/114 focuses on reading and<br />

interpretation of literature, and is an attractive alternative<br />

to English 110/111 for students wishing<br />

to continue in the study of Arts or Humanities.<br />

English 110: <strong>College</strong> Composition is designed<br />

to enable the student to produce clear, coherent<br />

and fully developed essays. The course covers<br />

a<strong>ca</strong>demic writing styles, rhetori<strong>ca</strong>l modes, editing<br />

techniques and research practices.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

A ‘C’ or better in ENGL 12 or equivalent or LPI<br />

level 4.<br />

PSYC 240 Child Development<br />

An introduction to normal child development,<br />

this course explores selected aspects of the physi<strong>ca</strong>l,<br />

cognitive, emotional, and moral development<br />

of children from birth to adolescence; and<br />

examines the major theories of child development.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

PSYC 100/101 or equivalent or written permission<br />

of the Instructor and School Chair.<br />

ECCE 293 Child-Centered<br />

Partnerships II<br />

The concepts and skills of ECCE 193 are further<br />

developed and enhanced. Students examine<br />

guiding relationships and apply principles and<br />

skills to complex situations. Ways of enhancing<br />

partnerships with families through active support<br />

to parents are learned and practiced.<br />

ECCE 294 Block Practicum II<br />

Block practicum for 6 weeks in April/May In<br />

this course, students synthesize learning with<br />

practi<strong>ca</strong>l appli<strong>ca</strong>tion. The focus is on collaboration<br />

with families and community in the creation<br />

of inclusive, responsive, culturally- sensitive,<br />

child-centered environments for young children.<br />

Learners continue to engage in the process of<br />

self-reflection and individual goal setting regarding<br />

exemplary professional practice. Seminars are<br />

scheduled for reflective discussion of practicum<br />

learning.<br />
