Program Objectives<br />

For students interested in earning a Bachelor<br />

of Science degree in Biology, this Associate of<br />

Science degree provides two years of university<br />

transferable courses that fulfill most or all of the<br />

requirements to enter the third year of a Major or<br />

Honours program in Biology.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a<br />

general Associate of Science degree, to earn an<br />

Associate of Science degree in Biology, a student<br />

must complete at least 18 credits of biology<br />

courses at the 100 or 200 level, including at least<br />

six credits at the 100 level.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

Admission to the Associate of Science degree<br />

in Biology program requires the completion of<br />

Biology 12, Chemistry 11, English 12, Physics 11<br />

with a grade of “C” or higher and Principles of<br />

Math 12 with a grade of “C+” or higher.<br />

Course of Studies<br />

The following is a suggested mix of courses<br />

to satisfy requirements for the Associate<br />

of Science degree in biology. Courses<br />

should be chosen only after consultation<br />

with a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> counsellor.<br />

Semester 1<br />

• ENGL 110-3: <strong>College</strong> Composition or<br />

• ENGL 112-3: Introduction to Poetry and<br />

Drama<br />

• BIOL 104-3: Biology I<br />

• CHEM 110-3: Fundamentals of Chemistry<br />

or<br />

• CHEM 122-3: General Chemistry I<br />

• MATH 100-3: Calculus I<br />

• PHYS 102-3: Basic Physics or<br />

• PHYS 104-3: Fundamental Phusics I<br />

Semester 2<br />

• ENGL 111-3: Introduction to Literature or<br />

• ENGL 114-3: Introduction to Prose Fiction<br />

• BIOL 106-3: Biology II<br />

• CHEM 125-4: Foundations of Chemistry II<br />

• MATH 101-3: Calculus II<br />

• PHYS 103-3: Basic Physics II or<br />

• PHYS 105-3: Fundamental Physics II<br />

Semester 3<br />

• BIOL 204-3: Cell Biology<br />

• BIOL 2xx 1 (3 credits)<br />

• CHEM 212-3: Organic Chemistry I<br />

• 100 or 200 level Arts other than English (3<br />

credits)<br />

• Science elective 2 (3 credits)<br />

Semester 4<br />

• BIOL 204-3: Cell Biology<br />

• BIOL 2xx1(3 credits)<br />

• CHEM 212-3: Organic Chemistry I<br />

• 100 or 200 level Arts elective other than<br />

English (3 credits)<br />

Ecology), Biology 202 (Principles of Genetics),<br />

Biology 210 (Biology of Vascular Plants), Biology<br />

212 (Microbiology), or Biology 214 (Vertebrate<br />

Morphology). Please note that not all second-year<br />

biology courses are offered every semester.<br />

Students transferring to UBC are advised to<br />

choose from the following second-year courses:<br />

Biology 200, Biology 210, Biology 212, Biology<br />

214, Chemistry 222.<br />

Students transferring to UVic are advised to take<br />

Biology 200 and Biology 202. Statistics 206 is<br />

recommended as a science elective.<br />

Students transferring to SFU are advised to take<br />

Biology 200 and Biology 202. Biology 210 is<br />

recommended as a science elective.<br />

Students transferring to UNBC are advised to<br />

choose from the following second-year courses:<br />

Biology 200, Biology 202, Biology 210, Biology<br />

212. Geography 232 is an option for the science<br />

elective.<br />

All second-year Biology courses are suitable for<br />

students transferring to UBCO.<br />

Students transferring to TRU are advised to<br />

choose from the following second-year courses:<br />

Biology 202, Biology 210, Biology 212, Biology<br />

214. Computer Science 100 or Computer Science<br />

132 are suitable options for the science elective.<br />
