Program Objectives<br />

For students interested in a bachelor degree in the<br />

sciences, the Associate of Science degree provides<br />

two years of courses, and fulfills most or all course<br />

requirements to enter the third year of Bachelor of<br />

Science degree programs at universities in British<br />

Columbia.<br />

Students may complete a general Associate of Science<br />

degree, or choose from discipline-specific Associate of<br />

Science degrees in either Biochemistry or Biology.<br />

General Course Requirement for an<br />

Associate of Science Degree<br />

Course/Programs Credits cOnditions<br />

English 6 100-level<br />

Mathematics 6 At least 3 credits from Math 100, 101, 200<br />

Science 36 100-level or higher; at least 3 credits in a Laboratorybased<br />

Science; at least 18 credits at the 200 level or higher<br />

in at least 2 subject areas.<br />

Arts Elective 6 100-level or higher, excluding English<br />

University Transfer Courses 6 100-level or higher; may be Arts or Science courses or<br />

other subjects, (e.g. Commerce) with<br />

university transfer credits.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

To earn a General Associate of Science degree<br />

the student must:<br />

• Select a two-year program of study in<br />

consultation with a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

counsellor. An appointment may be<br />

made by <strong>ca</strong>lling the Counselling Office at<br />

1.888.953.1133, ext 273.<br />

• Fulfill all the requirements for a general<br />

Associate of Science degree as outlined above.<br />

• Discipline specific Associate of Science<br />

degrees may have additional course<br />

requirements (see individual program<br />

descriptions).<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

Admission to an Associate of Science degree<br />

program requires the completion of English 12<br />

with a grade of “C” or higher and Principles of<br />

Math 12 with a grade of “C+” or higher. Other<br />

prerequisites depend on the courses chosen to<br />

make up the degree, and should be determined<br />

with the advice of a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> counsellor.<br />

Students who lack the admission requirements<br />

may still gain admission to the program by taking<br />

a combination of university and upgrading<br />

courses during the first year. This mode of<br />

entry may extend the length of their program.<br />

Course of Studies<br />

Associate of Science degree requirements (also,<br />

please see the summary table below):<br />

• Completion of 60 semester credits of courses<br />

that have assigned or unassigned university<br />

transfer credit at the 100-level or higher at<br />

accredited provincial universities;<br />

• Completion of at least 15 of these 60<br />

semester credits at Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong>;<br />

• Completion of at least six semester credits<br />

in courses that have assigned or unassigned<br />

university transfer credit at the 100-level in<br />

English;<br />

• Completion of at least six semester credits in<br />

Mathematics; at least three credits must be in<br />

Calculus;<br />

• Completion of at least 18 credits in Science<br />

courses that have assigned or unassigned<br />

university transfer credit at the 100-level<br />

or higher; at least three credits must be in a<br />

Laboratory-based Science course;<br />

• Completion of at least 18 credits in Science<br />

courses that have assigned or unassigned<br />

university transfer credit at the 200-level or<br />

higher; these credits must be in at least two<br />

subject areas;<br />

• Completion of at least six semester credits<br />

in Arts courses at the 100-level or higher,<br />

excluding English;<br />

• Completion of an additional six semester<br />

credits in courses that have assigned or<br />

unassigned university transfer credit at the<br />

100-level or higher; may be Arts, Sciences,<br />

or university transferable courses in other<br />

program areas.<br />

In addition, the student must have achieved an<br />

overall grade of “C” or better in each course.<br />

Only those courses with university transfer credit<br />

at accredited provincial universities in British<br />

Columbia (UBC, UVic, SFU and UNBC) will<br />

count towards the Associate Degree.<br />
