Sociology Flexible pre-major<br />

For students interested in earning a Bachelor of<br />

Arts degree in Sociology, Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers<br />

the provincially accredited Flexible Pre-Major,<br />

60 credits of first- and second-year courses which<br />

include 15 credits of sociology. Students who<br />

complete the following courses and have a total<br />

of 60 credits of first- and second-year courses<br />

will be considered for admission as an Sociology<br />

major starting at the third-year level. Students so<br />

admitted at the third-year level will normally be<br />

eligible to complete their degree in the equivalent<br />

of two further a<strong>ca</strong>demic years, if all other degree<br />

requirements are met.<br />

Courses should be chosen only after consultation<br />

with a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> counsellor.<br />

The Sociology Flexible Pre-Major consists of the<br />

following:<br />

• SOC 120-3: Introductory Sociology I<br />

• SOC 121-3: Introductory Sociology II<br />

• SOC 205-3: Introduction to Social Research<br />

• SOC 225-3: Introduction to Sociologi<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

Theory<br />

• STAT 105-3: Introduction to Statistics<br />

• SOC 200-3: Deviance and Social Control<br />

or SOC 215-3: Canadian Social Structure<br />

(highly recommended, however, to take both<br />

courses)<br />

• ANTH 101-3: Introduction to<br />

Anthropology II<br />

• ASTR 102-3: Introduction to Astronomy<br />

• ENGL 111-3: Introduction to Literature<br />

• PSYC 101-3: Introductory Psychology II<br />

Theory<br />

The remaining 45 credits (15 courses) may<br />

be of your choosing, but check the entrance<br />

requirements at the university to which you plan<br />

to transfer for third year. For example, almost<br />

all degrees require at least 3 credits of first-year<br />

English (English 110), 3 credits in any first-year<br />

science course (eg. Geology 132), and often 3<br />

credits of a second language (eg. French 112).<br />
