Program Objectives<br />

The Associate of Arts degree in English (Writing<br />

Studies) is designed for students who not only<br />

wish to earn a bachelor’s degree in English, but<br />

also who want to incorporate a strong focus on<br />

writing into their curriculum.<br />

The program provides two years of university<br />

transferable courses that fulfill most or all of<br />

the requirements to enter the third year of<br />

a Major or Honours program in English. In<br />

addition, it emphasizes writing: literary criticism,<br />

communi<strong>ca</strong>tions, freelance writing, or imaginative<br />

writing in fiction, poetry, non-fiction and drama.<br />

Students will develop a portfolio of their work and<br />

learn to prepare manuscripts for publi<strong>ca</strong>tion.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

In addition to fulfilling the program requirements<br />

for a general Associate of Arts degree, to<br />

earn an associate degree in English (Writing<br />

Studies), a student must complete the following<br />

requirements:<br />

• At least 18 credits of English courses at the<br />

100 and 200 level. These credits should<br />

include ENGL 112, ENGL 114, ENGL 200,<br />

ENGL 201 and CWRT 210 - Ecopoetics.<br />

• Four Writing Studies courses - CWRT 100,<br />

CWRT 101, CWRT 200 and CWRT 201.<br />

These should be taken in place of one arts<br />

elective each semester.<br />

Course of Studies<br />

The following is a suggested mix of courses to<br />

satisfy requirements for the Associate of Arts<br />

degree in English (Writing Studies). Courses<br />

should be chosen only after consultation with a<br />

Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> counsellor.<br />

Semester 1<br />

• CWRT 100-3: Studies in Writing I<br />

• ENGL 110-3: <strong>College</strong> Composition or<br />

• ENGL112-3: Introduction to Poetry and<br />

Drama (ENGL 112 recommended)<br />

• 100-level Math, Computing Science,<br />

or Statistics (3 credits) (may be taken in<br />

Semester 1 or 2)<br />

• 100- or 200-level Humanities, excluding<br />

English; a foreign language is recommended<br />

(3 credits)<br />

• 100- or 200-level Social Sciences (3 credits)<br />

Semester 2<br />

• CWRT 101-3: Studies in Writing II<br />

• ENGL 111-3: Introduction to Literature or<br />

• ENGL 114-3: Introduction to Prose<br />

Fiction(ENGL 114 recommended)<br />

• Lab Science - Requires a minimum two-hour<br />

lab and excludes any course in Engineering/<br />

Applied Science, Computing Science, or<br />

Math. (3 credits) (may be taken in Semester<br />

1 or 2)<br />

• 100- or 200-level Humanities; a foreign<br />

language is recommended (3 credits)<br />

• 100- or 200-level Social Sciences (3 credits)<br />

Semester 3<br />

• CWRT 200-3: Studies in Writing III<br />

• ENGL 200-3: A Survey of English Literature I<br />

• ENGL 202-3: Canadian Literature I or<br />

• ENGL 204-3: Children’s Literature I<br />

• 100- or 200-level Science elective (3 credits)<br />

• 100- or 200-level university transfer elective<br />

(3 credits)<br />

Semester 4<br />

• CWRT 201-3: Studies in Writing IV<br />

• ENGL 201-3: A Survey of English Literature II<br />

• ENGL 203-3: Canadian Literature II or<br />

• ENGL 205-3: Children’s Literature II or<br />

• CWRT 210-3: Ecopoetics<br />

• 100- or 200-level university transfer elective<br />

(3 credits)<br />
