Program Objectives<br />

Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong>, in cooperation with the Industry<br />

Training Authority, offers Carpentry Techni<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

Training for all four levels required for apprenticeship.<br />

Each level consists of a six week program<br />

that meets 30 hours per week.<br />

The apprenticeship process requires time spent<br />

on the job supplemented by in-school training. A<br />

<strong>ca</strong>rpentry apprentice must complete a four-year<br />

program including 6,480 workplace hours and<br />

720 in-school hours of training completed in four<br />

levels, each for six weeks. After completion and<br />

achievement of a passing grade, the apprentice<br />

will hold the BC Certifi<strong>ca</strong>te of Apprenticeship,<br />

BC Certifi<strong>ca</strong>te of Qualifi<strong>ca</strong>tion, and the<br />

Interprovincial Standard Endorsement also known<br />

as Red Seal.<br />

Career Potential<br />

Carpenters perform all work in connection with<br />

the assembly and erection of forms for concrete,<br />

wood and metal frame construction, and install<br />

interior and exterior finishing for residential, commercial<br />

and industrial projects, while conforming<br />

to plans, specifi<strong>ca</strong>tions and lo<strong>ca</strong>l building codes.A<br />

<strong>ca</strong>rpenter may work independently or within<br />

an organization. Most <strong>ca</strong>rpenters earn between<br />

$15 and $30 per hour depending on their skill,<br />

qualifi<strong>ca</strong>tions, lo<strong>ca</strong>tion and employer. Carpenters<br />

<strong>ca</strong>n advance to senior level positions such as<br />

foreperson, contractor or subcontractor where<br />

they <strong>ca</strong>n earn $50 or more per hour.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

• indentured in Carpentry Apprenticeship,<br />

andgraduation from a British Columbia<br />

Senior Secondary School or equivalent,<br />

andphysi<strong>ca</strong>lly fit (mobility, lifting), have good<br />

manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination<br />

and balance, and be able to work at<br />

heights and in adverse weather.<br />
