Program Summary<br />

Program Objectives<br />

This Associate Certifi<strong>ca</strong>te provides advanced<br />

training and recognition to certifi<strong>ca</strong>te level and<br />

experienced practitioners in a specific human<br />

service field, whose goal is to continue their learning<br />

and <strong>ca</strong>reer advancement in Mental Health and<br />

Addictions.<br />

Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> Human Services Department is offering<br />

an Associate Certifi<strong>ca</strong>te that is designed for those<br />

already in the field who wish to focus their practice in<br />

the area of Mental Health and Addictions.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

1. A Diploma in Human Services or a related field:<br />

• Evidence of graduation (diploma or transcripts)<br />

• 2 letters of reference if your transcripts are not<br />

from Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> OR<br />

2. A Certifi<strong>ca</strong>te in Human Services or a related field:<br />

• 2 years of subsequent work in the Human<br />

Service field<br />

• 2 letters of reference<br />

Program Courses<br />

ADD 184 Introduction to Addiction<br />

This course is designed as an introduction to the study<br />

of addiction, both substance and behavioural. Current<br />

research in the pharmacologi<strong>ca</strong>l, physiologi<strong>ca</strong>l, social<br />

and spiritual <strong>ca</strong>uses of addiction are considered as well<br />

as current models for understanding dependence,<br />

recovery and relapse. Students learn how the addictive<br />

process is assessed and treated based on the physi<strong>ca</strong>l,<br />

emotional, social and spiritual needs of the client.<br />

Family support, self-help programs, harm reduction<br />

and current trends in addictive substances and<br />

behaviours are also explored.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

ENGL 12 or equivalent.<br />

HSER 257 Mental Health<br />

Issues: Practi<strong>ca</strong>l Solutions<br />

(Recommended Elective)<br />

Practi<strong>ca</strong>l Responses to Mental Health and Addictions<br />

Problems, provides instruction in a variety<br />

of rehabilitative and treatment modalities used in<br />

work with marginalized populations. Attitudes<br />

toward mental health and substance use problems<br />

and how they impact helper effectiveness are<br />

explored in a supportive milieu. Evidence-based<br />

practices such as Psychosocial Rehabilitation and<br />

Harm Reduction are used as frameworks for the<br />

development of skills and knowledge. Students<br />

are introduced to strategies for overcoming stigma<br />

and supporting client empowerment in a variety<br />

of community and facility settings.<br />

Workshop - Motivational<br />

Interviewing<br />

This 12-hour lecture format exponential workshop<br />

is designed to provide practitioners and students<br />

with basic Motivational Interviewing Skills<br />

in order to enhance the effectiveness of their<br />

work with both mental health, addiction and<br />

concurrent populations in a variety of settings.<br />

Motivational Interviewing is a directive, clients<br />

centered counseling style for eliciting behaviour<br />

change by helping clients to explore and resolve<br />

ambivalence. Compared with non-directive<br />

counseling, it is more focused and goal-directed.<br />

HSER 257 and ADD 184.<br />
