Directed Studies Major<br />

This major was created to address the diverse<br />

interests of students who are entering the music<br />

program. It provides access to a wide range of<br />

courses and students must design their own<br />

special project that serves as a fo<strong>ca</strong>l point for their<br />

year of study. Every two weeks students will meet<br />

one on one with a faculty member for mentorship,<br />

where students receive guidance on issues<br />

relating to their project and are assessed by the<br />

instructor. Examples of Directed Studies projects<br />

include; creating a CD of original material, creating<br />

a filmscoring demo, rehearsing, performing<br />

and recording with your own band.<br />

Appli<strong>ca</strong>tions<br />

The Directed Studies major is available by appli<strong>ca</strong>tion<br />

only. All appli<strong>ca</strong>tions must be submitted to<br />

the Program Coordinator by April 30th. English<br />

110 may be substituted for TWC 266.<br />

All electives may not be offered each semester.<br />

Successful completion of all required courses in a<br />

given semester, with a grade of “C-” or<br />

better and a grade point average of 2.0, is required<br />

to proceed within the program.<br />

Program Courses<br />

MUSC 250b Directed<br />

Studies/Mentorship<br />

A weekly bi-weekly (every other week) 1/2 hour<br />

private tutorship is provided for all Directed<br />

Studies majors. Students will consult with their<br />

mentor on a consistent basis (for a total of six<br />

meetings per semester). Instruction is designed to<br />

increase student’s techni<strong>ca</strong>l, artistic, and musi<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

quality relating to final project goals, as pertaining<br />

to student’s project proposal and portfolio. The<br />

mentor may be changed, pending approval, on a<br />

semester basis.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

Must be enrolled in the Directed Studies Major.<br />

MUSC 252 Private Lesson III A<br />

A weekly half-hour private instrumental or vo<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

lesson is provided for all Music Production, Composition,<br />

and General Music majors. Instruction<br />

is available on keyboard, woodwinds, saxophone,<br />

percussion, guitar, electric and acoustic bass, and<br />

voice. Lessons are designed to increase students’<br />

techni<strong>ca</strong>l and musi<strong>ca</strong>l abilities.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

MUSC 151.<br />

MUSC 258 Preceptorship I<br />

This course is designed to immerse each student<br />

in a professional performing environment<br />

where they will receive feedback not only from<br />

their instructor, but also from the club owners,<br />

managers, and customers. In this class, students<br />

will be required to assume a leadership role within<br />

their ensemble. Upon successful completion, they<br />

will have increased their performance abilities in<br />

the areas of versatility, sound, sight-reading, and<br />

improvisation. Students will be able to function in<br />

a variety of professional engagements common to<br />

today’s music industry.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

Must be a full-time Performance Major.<br />

MUSC 264 Instrumental Lab III<br />

This course is designed to help students develop<br />

instrumental skills. Grouped by instrument,<br />

students learn the fundamentals of reading,<br />

articulation, balance, dynamics, styles and<br />

technique as related to their particular instrument.<br />
