Program Objectives<br />

Carpentry Foundation Techni<strong>ca</strong>l Training will<br />

provide students with the opportunity to build a<br />

<strong>ca</strong>reer in <strong>ca</strong>rpentry. Combining theory and shop<br />

time the program covers the first year Industry<br />

Training Authority Level 1 Carpentry Apprenticeship<br />

Techni<strong>ca</strong>l Training. This training prepares<br />

students for entry into employment and into the<br />

BC Provincial Apprenticeship program. Practi<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

work experience both on and off college property<br />

is part of the foundation program.<br />

Career Potential<br />

Carpenters perform all work in connection with<br />

the assembly and erection of forms for concrete,<br />

wood and metal frame construction, and install<br />

interior and exterior finishing for residential, commercial<br />

and industrial projects, while conforming<br />

to plans, specifi<strong>ca</strong>tions and lo<strong>ca</strong>l building codes.<br />

A <strong>ca</strong>rpenter may work independently or within<br />

an organization. Most <strong>ca</strong>rpenters earn between<br />

$15 and $30 per hour depending on their skill,<br />

qualifi<strong>ca</strong>tions, lo<strong>ca</strong>tion and employer. Carpenters<br />

<strong>ca</strong>n advance to senior level positions such as<br />

foreperson, contractor or subcontractor where<br />

they <strong>ca</strong>n earn $50 or more per hour.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

• graduation from a British Columbia Senior<br />

Secondary School or equivalent,* with<br />

• Principles of Math 10, Appli<strong>ca</strong>tions of Math<br />

11 or Essentials of Math 12, and<br />

• physi<strong>ca</strong>lly fit (mobility, lifting), have good<br />

manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination<br />

and balance, and be able to work at<br />

heights and in adverse weather.<br />

• all appli<strong>ca</strong>nts are required to complete a<br />

computerized placement test in reading,<br />

writing and mathematics once they have<br />

submitted their appli<strong>ca</strong>tion.<br />

*Consideration will be given to mature individuals<br />

(19 years or older) who are not Senior Secondary<br />

School graduates provided they have completed or<br />

are in the process of obtaining Principles of Math<br />

10 or equivalent with a ‘C’ grade or better. (This<br />

course must be completed prior to the program<br />

entry date.)<br />

A refundable tool deposit of $100 will be required<br />

at the start of the program.<br />
