Program Objectives<br />

For students interested in a bachelor degree in<br />

the arts, the Associate of Arts degree provides<br />

two years of courses and fulfills most or all course<br />

requirements to enter the third year of Bachelor<br />

of Arts degree programs at universities in British<br />

Columbia.<br />

Students may complete a general Associate of<br />

Arts degree, or choose from a discipline-specific<br />

Associate of Arts degree in Elementary Edu<strong>ca</strong>tion,<br />

Entry to Traditional Chinese Medicine, English,<br />

History, Peace Studies, Psychology, or Writing<br />

Studies.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

To earn an Associate of Arts degree, the student<br />

must do the following:<br />

• Select a two-year program of study in<br />

consultation with a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

counsellor. An appointment may be<br />

made by <strong>ca</strong>lling the Counselling Office at<br />

1.888.953.1133, ext 273.<br />

• Fulfill all the requirements for an Associate of<br />

Arts degree as outlined below.<br />

Students may have to complete discipline-specific<br />

course requirements (see individual program<br />

descriptions).<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

Admission to an Associate of Arts degree program<br />

requires the completion of English 12 with a grade<br />

of “C” or higher. Other prerequisites depend on the<br />

courses chosen to make up the degree, and should<br />

be determined with the advice of a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

counsellor. Students who lack the admission<br />

requirements may still gain admission to the<br />

program by taking a combination of university and<br />

upgrading courses during the first year. This mode<br />

of entry may extend the length of their program.<br />

Course of Studies<br />

Associate of Arts degree requirements are listed<br />

and summarized in the table below:<br />

• Completion of 60 semester credits of courses<br />

that have assigned or unassigned university<br />

transfer credit at the 100-level or higher at<br />

accredited provincial universities;<br />

six must be Social Sciences<br />

Arts Courses 18 200 level or higher; credits must be in<br />

at least two subject areas<br />

Science Courses 9 100 level or higher; three credits of Mathematics,<br />

Computing Science, or Statistics, three credits of<br />

Laboratory Science: requires a minimum two-hour<br />

lab and excludes any course in Engineering (Applied<br />

Science), Computing Science, Mathematics, or<br />

Statistics. Three additional Science credits at the 100<br />

level or higher.<br />

University Transfer Courses 9 100 or 200 level; Arts, Sciences or university<br />

transferable courses in other program areas<br />

TOTAL 60<br />

Note: Always consult with a Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> Counsellor before selecting courses towards an Associate Degree<br />

• Completion of at least 15 of these 60<br />

semester credits at Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong>;<br />

• Completion of at least six semester credits<br />

in courses that have assigned or unassigned<br />

university transfer credit at the 100-level in<br />

English;<br />

• Completion of at least 18 credits in<br />

Humanities and Social Science courses<br />

(other than English) that have assigned or<br />

unassigned university transfer credit at the<br />

100- or 200-level; at least six of these credits<br />

must be in the Humanities, and at least six of<br />

these credits must be in the Social Sciences;<br />

• Completion of at least 18 semester credits in<br />

Arts courses that have assigned or unassigned<br />

university transfer credit at the 200-level or<br />

higher; these credits must be in at least two<br />

different subject areas;<br />

• Completion of at least nine credits in Science<br />

courses, including at least three credits<br />

in Mathematics or Computing Science<br />

or Statistics and at least three credits in a<br />

laboratory Science course (i.e. any course<br />

in the Sciences list worth three credits or<br />

more and with a lab of at least two hours,<br />

but excluding any course in Applied Science,<br />

Computing Science, Math or Statistics);<br />

• Completion of an additional nine semester<br />

credits or more in courses that have assigned<br />

or unassigned university transfer credit at the<br />

100-level or higher;<br />

In addition, the student must have achieved an<br />

overall grade of “C” or better in each course.<br />

Only those courses with university transfer credit<br />

at accredited provincial universities will count<br />

towards the Associate Degree.<br />
