ESTH 120 Introduction to<br />

Esthetics - Spa Industry<br />

This is a comprehensive look at the history of<br />

esthetics, as a background to the entire field of<br />

study. Current <strong>ca</strong>reer opportunities are examined<br />

along with the necessary skills and equipment<br />

required in order to succeed as a professional<br />

esthetician. Time evaluation for various treatments<br />

is taught, as are safety and first aid procedures.<br />

ESTH 121 Hygiene,<br />

Bacteriology, Sanitation<br />

The importance of personal and public hygiene<br />

is emphasised in this course. A study is made of<br />

the bacteriology of the skin, with a look at related<br />

diseases and disorders. Proper sanitation and<br />

sterilization procedures are established.<br />

ESTH 122 Skin: Anatomy,<br />

Physiology and Disorders<br />

Here the skin is studied at both a microscopic and<br />

biologi<strong>ca</strong>l level. Students take an in depth look<br />

at how the skin is structured, its properties and<br />

functions. The course deals with the recognition<br />

and treatment of various disorders of the skin<br />

including lesions and blackheads.<br />

ESTH 123 Basic Skin Care<br />

All aspects of basic skin <strong>ca</strong>re are covered here,<br />

from the importance of a liability release form<br />

prior to treatment, through to the client consultation<br />

itself. Students are familiarized with the<br />

classifi<strong>ca</strong>tion of skin types, skin analysis and the<br />

nutrition and health of the skin.<br />

ESTH 124 Facial Treatment<br />

- Cosmetic Massage 1<br />

Students work through the preparation of both the<br />

treatment area and the client prior to a facial. An<br />

understanding of what facial treatment products<br />

are available, their appli<strong>ca</strong>tion and suitability to<br />

the various skin types is gained. Basic facial steps<br />

without the use of equipment and basic massage<br />

movements are covered, as is an overview of the<br />

anatomy and physiology of the face and décolleté.<br />

Contraindi<strong>ca</strong>tions (a factor that renders the<br />

<strong>ca</strong>rrying out of a particular treatment inadvisable)<br />

and safety for all skin types are studied.<br />

ESTH 125 Manicure - Artificial Nails 1<br />

This course covers the fundamentals and theory of<br />

both manicuring and the appli<strong>ca</strong>tion of artificial<br />

nails. It begins with manicuring procedures and<br />

the selection and preparation of instruments<br />

though to the anatomy and physiology of the<br />

hand and arm, diseases and disorders of the hands<br />

and nails and the shapes of hands and nails. The<br />

course then goes on to cover cuticle treatment,<br />

massage for arms and hands, types of manicures<br />

and polish appli<strong>ca</strong>tion. The appli<strong>ca</strong>tion of artificial<br />

nails, their repair and follow up treatments,<br />

concludes this module.<br />

ESTH 126 Foot Care 1<br />

Here the focus is on the <strong>ca</strong>re and treatment of<br />

the foot. A foundation is established by studying<br />

the anatomy and physiology of the legs and<br />

feet. Diseases and disorders related to foot <strong>ca</strong>re<br />

are noted along with the relevant treatments<br />

available. The procedures of foot <strong>ca</strong>re along with<br />

the preparation and selection of instruments are<br />

taught.Shaping nails, nail repair, the removal of<br />

dead skin and foot and leg massage make up the<br />

rest of this course.<br />

ESTH 127 Hair Removal - Waxing 1<br />

This is the study of hair and its removal. The<br />

composition, structure and functions of hair are<br />

examined along with hair removal products or<br />

depilatories. Preparation of the treatment area,<br />

including an analysis of the clients skin, the<br />

procedure of waxing, and follow-up treatment is<br />

covered.<br />

ESTH 128 General Trade/Selling/<br />

Professionalism/Reception/Monitor<br />

Conduct, communi<strong>ca</strong>tion and professionalism are<br />

focused on in this broad ranging course. Students<br />

look beyond the treatments themselves to the<br />

demands of the working environment. Areas covered<br />

include the assessment of a clients needs and<br />

attitudes, reception and monitor duties and appointment<br />

booking. On a communi<strong>ca</strong>tions level<br />

subjects include client greeting, client consultation<br />

and telephone manner. Time is given to image<br />

projection, appropriate dress, personal development,<br />

motivation and goal setting. Promotion of<br />

the services offered, maintaining client satisfaction<br />

and attendance requirements are covered. The<br />

course also deals with the legal requirements when<br />

performing esthetic treatments, the Cosmetology<br />

Act and Association and the rules for professional<br />

ethics and standards.<br />

ESTH 131 Cosmetic Chemistry<br />

- Product Knowledge<br />

How products are made, what they are made of<br />

and why, is the essence of this course. Students<br />

take an in-depth look at organic and inorganic<br />

chemistry, the properties of common elements,<br />

compounds and mixtures, and the pH s<strong>ca</strong>le.<br />

Product knowledge includes an understanding of<br />

moisturizers, nourishing creams and skin tonics.<br />

ESTH 132 Anatomy and Physiology<br />

This is an overview of the body, how it is<br />

structured and its major systems; integumentary,<br />

muscular, nervous, sensory, endocrine, circulatory,<br />

lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary,<br />

reproductive. Students become familiar with<br />

anatomi<strong>ca</strong>l terms and definitions.<br />

ESTH 133 Basic Makeup<br />

Makeup is studied as an art and science.<br />

Starting with client consultation and preparation,<br />

through to ethics and attitude towards makeup.<br />

An analysis is made of basic facial shapes and<br />

features, so the correct choice of makeup options<br />

<strong>ca</strong>n be made. Makeup is looked at regarding<br />

colour psychology, the selection of appropriate<br />

foundation, and use of blusher, eyeliner, mas<strong>ca</strong>ra<br />

and lip colour, and the art of facial contouring.<br />

Students are instructed in basic day makeup and<br />

the enhancement of eyebrows and eyelashes.<br />

ESTH 134 Facial Treatment<br />

- Cosmetic Massage 2<br />

Here students are introduced to the use of<br />

electricity, galvanic current and high frequency<br />

in esthetics. There is an opportunity to practice<br />

with the equipment used in facials, including light<br />

therapy. Time management skills are honed to<br />

ensure facial treatments are completed within the<br />

allotted time.<br />

ESTH 135 Manicure - Artificial Nails 2<br />

The goal of this course is build on the theoreti<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

knowledge gained in Manicure and Artificial Nails<br />

I by giving students the opportunity to practice<br />

manicuring and artificial nail appli<strong>ca</strong>tion on clients.<br />

The correct use of implements and products<br />

on clients, including following all sanitary and<br />

safety rules, is emphasised.<br />

ESTH 136 Foot Care 2<br />

This course is designed to build on the theoreti<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

expertise gained from the preceding course, Foot<br />

Care I. The goal here is to spend time in the<br />

practi<strong>ca</strong>l appli<strong>ca</strong>tion of foot <strong>ca</strong>re using the proper<br />

implements and products on clients, including<br />

following all sanitary and safety rules.<br />

ESTH 137 Hair Removal - Waxing 2<br />

In this course students are given time in the<br />

salon to put into practice the theory learned in<br />

Hair Removal and Waxing 1. The goal being the<br />

proper use of implements and products on clients,<br />

including following all sanitary and safety rules.<br />

ESTH 140 Small Business Management<br />

This course is designed to compliment the<br />

esthetician skills acquired so that graduates have<br />

an understanding of the setting up and running<br />

of a small business, and the confidence to enter<br />
