Additional Information<br />

Students who complete the Advanced English<br />

Language program and wish to continue their<br />

study of English language <strong>ca</strong>n enroll in the<br />

University & <strong>College</strong> Preparation Program.<br />

In addition to courses in <strong>College</strong> Preparation<br />

and Advanced English, students <strong>ca</strong>n take 1-3<br />

university courses offered in other college programs.<br />

Enrolment in such courses must be approved<br />

by Selk<strong>irk</strong> International Department Head and<br />

program school chair. Acceptance will depend on<br />

the student’s English language ability, performance<br />

in pervious classes, skill level in the subject area, the<br />

prerequisite requirements of the course(s) desired,<br />

and the availability of space in each course.<br />

Successful completion of the Advanced level of the<br />

English Language Program and English 51 with a<br />

grade of ‘C’ or better is required for entry to most<br />

university transfer and college programs.<br />

Program Objectives<br />

The objective of the English Language Program<br />

is to provide students with the language skills to<br />

communi<strong>ca</strong>te effectively in an English-speaking<br />

environment, as well as to succeed in college and<br />

university courses and improve future employment<br />

opportunities. Certifi<strong>ca</strong>tes are offered upon<br />

successful completion of different levels of the<br />

program.<br />

Language and Culture<br />

Experience Programs<br />

Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers a variety of short-Semester<br />

English language, cultural, and recreational programs<br />

ranging from 2-8 weeks. These programs<br />

<strong>ca</strong>n be customized to each group and combine<br />

conversational or a<strong>ca</strong>demic English with cultural<br />

and recreational activities, Canadian student<br />

and family life, and sightseeing opportunities.<br />

Students <strong>ca</strong>n enjoy great golf, <strong>ca</strong>noeing and hiking<br />

in the summer and skiing or snowboarding at one<br />

of Canada’s finest ski areas in the winter. Note:<br />

Student authorizations/visas are not required for<br />

short-Semester programs of six months or less.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

No TOEFL or IELTS score is needed for entry<br />

into the English Language Program. Appli<strong>ca</strong>nts<br />

must meet Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> general or international<br />

student admission requirements. International<br />

appli<strong>ca</strong>nts seeking admission must be at least 18<br />

years of age, or must have successfully completed<br />

the equivalent of British Columbia Grade 12.<br />

Upon arrival, students will be interviewed, tested<br />

and placed according to their skill levels and needs.<br />

Appli<strong>ca</strong>tion Deadlines: Students should apply<br />

for the English Language Program at least two<br />

months before classes begin, but appli<strong>ca</strong>tions that<br />

do not requiring visa permits will be accepted at<br />

any time as space allows. Students interested in<br />

other programs should inquire about program<br />

sepcific deadlines.<br />

Program Courses<br />

EASL 015 Fundamental Grammar<br />

This course provides an introduction to basic<br />

grammati<strong>ca</strong>l structures for students who speak<br />

English as an additional language. Students<br />

study and practice present, past, and future verb<br />

tenses, question forms, nouns and pronouns, and<br />

expressions of time and number in both written<br />

and oral form.<br />

EASL 016 Fundamental Writing<br />

This course provides students who speak English<br />

as an additional language with instruction and<br />

opportunities to write at a fundamental level.<br />

Students use and practice the verb forms studied<br />

in Grammar courses in their writing assignments<br />

and learn to use basic sentence and paragraph<br />

structure. Students begin to use fundamental<br />

components of the writing process to write about<br />

personal and familiar topics. Students use the lab<br />

for some class work and keep weekly journals to<br />

write about their experiences.<br />

EASL 017 Fundamental Reading<br />

This course helps students who speak English<br />

as an additional language to improve their<br />

understanding of English through reading<br />

at a fundamental level. Students build basic<br />

vo<strong>ca</strong>bulary, develop an understanding of word<br />

forms, learn to use reading skills such as skimming<br />

and s<strong>ca</strong>nning, and discuss ideas through reading<br />

selected material.<br />

EASL 018 Fundamental<br />

Communi<strong>ca</strong>tions<br />

This course develops students’ ability and<br />

confidence to conduct fundamental conversa-<br />

tions in English about common daily subjects.<br />

Students use common functional vo<strong>ca</strong>bulary, form<br />

simple phrases and questions, and practice high<br />

frequency grammati<strong>ca</strong>l structures to communi<strong>ca</strong>te<br />

personal needs, express personal likes and dislikes,<br />

and report personal and factual information.<br />

EASL 025 Intermediate<br />

Grammar - Verbs<br />

This course provides instruction and opportunities<br />

for students who speak English as an additional<br />

language to practice grammar at an intermediate<br />

level. Students study and practice ways to use<br />

different verb tenses, including present, past, and<br />

future, as well as time clauses, question patterns,<br />

nouns and pronouns, and modals.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

EASL 015 with a grade of “C” or better, or<br />

equivalent.<br />

EASL 026 Intermediate Writing<br />

- Sentence Structures<br />

This course provides students who speak English<br />

as an additional language with instruction in writing<br />

and opportunities to write at an intermediate<br />

level. The course helps students develop their<br />

ability to write sentences and paragraphs using the<br />

forms and structures studied in their Grammar<br />

courses. Students are introduced to the writing<br />

process and write descriptive and narrative<br />

chronologi<strong>ca</strong>l paragraphs. Students use the lab for<br />

some class work and also keep weekly journals to<br />

write about their experiences.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

EASL 016 with a grade of “C” or better, or<br />

equivalent.<br />

EASL 027 Intermediate Reading<br />

- Vo<strong>ca</strong>bulary and Meaning<br />

This course is an intermediate course for students<br />

who speak English as an additional language.<br />

Students read and discuss selected articles from<br />

the textbook and other sources with a focus on developing<br />

vo<strong>ca</strong>bulary and understanding meaning.<br />

Students develop their knowledge of word forms<br />

and use reading strategies such as guessing meaning<br />

from context in understanding main ideas.<br />

Students are encouraged to do supplementary<br />

reading and begin to use an English dictionary.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

EASL 017 with a grade of “C” or better, or<br />

equivalent.<br />

EASL 028 Intermediate<br />

Communi<strong>ca</strong>tions -<br />

Conversation Skills<br />

This course develops students’ ability to communi<strong>ca</strong>te<br />

beyond the basic skills related to personal<br />

and factual topics. Students develop vo<strong>ca</strong>bulary<br />

and grammar for informal conversations, listen<br />
