Associate Degrees
Two-Year DEGREE/Diploma, Associate of Arts Degree, associate of science degree at Castlegar
The Associate Degree is a formally established
credential recognized province-wide, designed to
provide the first two years of a four-year bachelor’s
degree. It requires the completion of a specified
two years (approximately 60 credits) of university
course work in the Arts and/or Sciences.
Associate Degrees give students the chance to
study in the Kootenays before transfering to a
university to complete a bachelor’s degree.
• Print off either an Associate of Arts Worksheet
or an Associate of Science Worksheet
and begin planning your four semesters of
courses that will meet the academic requirements
of your chosen associate degree.
• Have a Selkirk College counsellor check over
your assoicate worksheet with you after you
have filled it out.
• Once you have completed your studies at
Selkirk College, it is time to submit a request
for your associate degee or diploma. Simply
fill out an Application for Associate Degree
or Diploma and submit it, along with your
supporting documentation as outlined on the
form, to the Records Officer, Selkirk College,
301 Frank Beinder Way, Castlegar, BC V1N
4L3 or fax to 250.365.3929.
Tailor your degree
Associate degree requirements are flexible enough
to enable students to pursue individual educational
goals and programs while completing the
required first- and second- year university transfer
courses required for their intended major. They
can provide a broad education for students not
wishing to specialize in a particular discipline, or
they can be tailored to student interests. Specialized
Associate Degrees have been built to improve
transfer into the third year of degree programs in
particular subject areas.
Recognized across BC
After two years at Selkirk College, students can
transfer directly into the third year of degree
programs at post-secondary institutions across
the province. Both Simon Fraser University and
the University of Northern British Columbia give
priority admission to students with an Associate
Degree over other transfer students.
BC public universities give special transfer credit
recognition for students who have completed
an Associate of Arts degree or an Associate of
Science degree. This means that students who
have completed an associate degree are guaranteed
to receive two years of transfer credit (60 credits)
upon admission that can be applied towards
completion of their baccalaureate degree.
Students will receive credit for all their associate
degree courses according to the course-to-course
equivalencies in the BC Transfer Guide. In
addition, any university transfer courses that do
not have an equivalent at a particular institution
will be given unassigned credit. Unassigned credit
can be applied to general education or elective
requirements at the degree granting institution.
