Program Objectives<br />
Graduates of this program will have the skills and<br />
knowledge to conduct themselves in an ethi<strong>ca</strong>l<br />
manner, with deportment and confidence, while<br />
providing excellent customer service. They will<br />
know how to observe the rules of personal hygiene<br />
and grooming and will be able to perform all the<br />
procedures learned with an awareness of the safety<br />
factors involved.<br />
On finishing this course graduates will have a<br />
basic understanding of various bacteria and will<br />
know how to follow the procedures for sanitation<br />
and sterilization. Knowledge of the histology and<br />
physiology of the skin and an understanding of the<br />
structure and functions of the major body systems<br />
are gained, as is an ability to recognise different skin<br />
types along with their associated abnormalities.<br />

Graduates will be able to cleanse and manipulate<br />
the face and neck and use various types of skin<br />
<strong>ca</strong>re appliances, they will have an understanding<br />
of cosmetic chemistry, such as moisturizing and<br />
nourishing cream, skin toners and the pH s<strong>ca</strong>le.<br />
Also on a practi<strong>ca</strong>l level graduates will have<br />
mastered the performance of specialized skin<br />
treatments including facials, makeup, hair removal<br />
and manual/mechani<strong>ca</strong>l muscle toning. Graduates<br />
will be able to perform a professional manicure and<br />
pedicure, and will be able to recognize the presence<br />
of disorders and diseases of the nails.<br />
Upon successful completion of this program,<br />
graduates are qualified to write the examination<br />
for the Special Beauty Culture License as required<br />
by the Cosmetologists Association of British<br />
Columbia.<br />
Career Potential<br />
Individuals who acquired their license <strong>ca</strong>n find<br />
employment in sales and customer service,<br />
department stores, drug stores, beauty salons, day<br />
spas, distribution outlets, cosmetic manufacturers,<br />
beauty institutes, health clubs, cruise ships, resorts<br />
and cosmetic firms.<br />
Admission Requirements<br />
• graduation from a British Columbia Senior<br />
Secondary School or equivalent.*<br />
• all appli<strong>ca</strong>nts are required to complete a<br />
computerized placement test in reading,<br />
writing and mathematics once they have<br />
submitted their appli<strong>ca</strong>tion.<br />
• an interview with the instructor may be<br />
required before commencement of the<br />
program.<br />
• *Consideration will be given to mature<br />
individuals (19 years or older) who are not<br />
Senior Secondary School graduates provided<br />
they have successfully completed Grade 10 or<br />
equivalent.<br />
• In addition, <strong>ca</strong>ndidates should have<br />
the ability to understand written and<br />
verbal instruction in English, possess basic<br />
communi<strong>ca</strong>tion skill required for providing<br />
customer services, exhibit good hand-eye<br />
coordination, have normal colour vision,<br />
have good depth perception and the ability to<br />
perceive line and form, possess good manual<br />
and finger dexterity, and be able to stand for<br />
long periods of time.<br />
