Program Objectives<br />
The tourism sector may soon become the number<br />
one industry in BC; it already offers the most<br />
employment opportunities. There are currently<br />
approximately 115,000 direct tourism jobs in<br />
B.C. This two-year program is designed to prepare<br />
graduates for <strong>ca</strong>reers in tourism focusing primarily<br />
on resorts, hotels and restaurants but including all<br />
areas of hospitality.<br />
Studies begin with an understanding of where<br />
tourism originates and encompass the supervision<br />
of hospitality facilities. Knowledge, skills and<br />
practices pertaining to the industry, such as the<br />
reception of guests, food and beverage services,<br />
recreation and convention planning, accounting,<br />
maintenance, supervisory and overall management<br />
techniques are topics covered. Communi<strong>ca</strong>tions<br />
and human relations are emphasized.<br />
The objective of the program, through classroom<br />
instruction, practi<strong>ca</strong>l lab training and work<br />
experience, is to enable students to develop<br />
the abilities, skills and attitudes to analyze<br />
situations objectively and to then make effective<br />
management decisions.<br />
The guiding principle of the Resort and Hotel<br />
Management program is student centred<br />
involvement.through project based learning.<br />
During the school year our students are involved<br />
in organizing and supporting Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> as<br />
host institution for special events and conferences.<br />
Students participate in a professional internship<br />
program consisting of five months in the summer<br />
and fall between the first and second year of the<br />
program.<br />

spectrum of the resort and hotel industry. The<br />
