Antifilarial drugs
SCHISTOSOMICIDES
Praziquantel
I: Schistosomiasis; liver,lung and intestinal fluke
infections;tape worm infections.
C/I: Ocular cysticercosis, known hypersensitivity to
praziquantel.
P/C: Severe hepatic disease; patients with cerebral
cysticercosis require hospitalization
A/E: Dizziness, headache, malaise, abdominal pain, loss of
appetite, nausea,vomiting, sweating; skin rash, itching,
CSF reaction syndrome in patients being treated for
neurocysticercosis, fever, diarrhoea.
Dose: Schistosomiasis: Oral 20mg/kg/dose 2-3 times a day
at 4 to 6 hour intervals.
Flukes: Oral 25mg/kg/dose every 8 hours for 1-2 days.
Cysticercosis: Oral 50mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours
for 14 days.
Tapeworm: Oral 10-20mg/kg as a single dose.
P/A: Tablets 600mg(20)Rs 850-920/-
ANTIFILARIAL DRUGS
Diethylcarbamazine citrate
l: Effective drug available for filariasis caused by
W.bancrofti, B.malayi, Loa loa,O volvulus and tropical
eosinophilia
C/I: Pregnancy, hypersensitivity.
P/C: The first dose should be given with caution since
intense allergic reactions may follow.
A/E: Nausea, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness,
febrile reaction with rash, pruritus, and enlargement
of lymphnodes.
P/A: Tablets 50 and 100mg to be taken after meals
Dose: Filariasis: Oral 1 mg/kg on 1 st day increased gradually
over 3 days to 6 mg/kg daily in divided doses for 21
days
Tropical eosinophilia: 2-4mg/kg three times daily for
10 days
