Recommended Balanced Diets (ICMR Recommendation)<br />

Parentral Nutrition<br />

1. Glucose<br />

I: Treatment of hypoglycemia, maintenance fluid in<br />

newborn, fluid replacement without significant<br />

electrolyte deficit, management of hyperkalemia, to<br />

provide calorie requirements<br />

A/E:<br />

Thrombophlebitis with hypertonic dextrose solutions;<br />

fluid and electrolyte disturbances; hyperglycemia<br />

P/A: Injectable solution: 5%; 10% isotonic solutions of 500mL<br />

bottles. 10% and 20% solutions 1000ml for parenteral<br />

nutrition, 25%, 50% hypertonic solutions as 25 mL<br />

ampoules.<br />

Dose: Hypoglycemia 10% dextrose 5mL/kg.<br />

25% dextrose 2mL/kg with insulin for correction of<br />

hyperkalemia<br />

Higher concentrations of glucose are used for<br />

parenteral nutrition. Minimum 20% of calorie<br />

requirements should be provided by the maintenance<br />

fluid .<br />

2. Amino acid infusions<br />

Essential amino acids are available as parenteral<br />

solutions. They contain a mixture of essential and<br />

nonessential aminoacids. 5%, 6%,10% aminoacid infusion<br />

solutions 500mL and 100mL bottles<br />

Dose: 2-5g/kg/day<br />

3. Lipid emulsions<br />

10%, 20%, 30% emulsions 500ml bottle.<br />

Dose: 1-3 g/kg/day<br />

3 in 1 solution containing dextrose, amino acids and lipid is also<br />

available for parenteral nutrition commercially.<br />

4. Water for injection<br />

2-mL ,5-mL, 10-mL ampoules.<br />

Uses: in preparations intended for parenteral administration<br />

and in other sterile preparations<br />
