DRUGS USED IN DENTISTRY<br />

Generally medicines used in dentistry are the same as those in the<br />

field of medicine.This is especially true for the surgical departments in<br />

dentistry.But lot of substances are used in dentistry which finds application<br />

only in dentistry as far as medical field is concerned.<br />

Analgesics<br />

Aspirin<br />

I: Mild to moderate dental pain<br />

Dose : 300 – 600 mg. 6 – 8 hourly orally<br />

Paracetamol<br />

I: Mild to moderate dental pain where anti-inflammatory<br />

action is not required and following simple dental<br />

extractions<br />

Dose : 500 mg. 8 hourly<br />

Ibuprofen<br />

I: Mild to moderate pain following traumatic dental<br />

extractions<br />

Antibiotics generally used in Dentistry<br />

Phenoxy methyl penicillin<br />

out patient odontogenic infections<br />

Ampicillin<br />

dentoalveolar infections<br />

Amoxycillin<br />

drug of choice for prophylaxis of infective endocarditis<br />

in patients undergoing surgical procedures<br />

Erythromycin<br />

used in patients allergic to penicillin<br />

Clindamycin<br />

useful in oral infections especially in Ludwig’s angina<br />

Other drugs used.<br />

Doxycycline, Cloxacillin, Ciprofloxacin,<br />

Amoxycillin+Clavulanic acid and Ofloxacin<br />

Metronidazole gel 1% - topical dressing in periodontal<br />

conditions<br />

Tinidazole, Ornidazole are also used<br />
