DERMATOLOGICAL DRUGS
SUPERFICIAL MYCOSIS
Topical agents
Benzoic acid + Salicylic acid (Whitfield’s ointment)
I: Mild dermatophyte infections, particularly tinea pedis
and tinea corporis
A/E: Irritation and burning sensation
P/A: Cream or ointment: 5% + 3%.
Dose: Fungal skin infections: apply twice daily until the
infected skin is shed (usually at least 4 weeks)
Cost: 15g Rs 23/-
Miconazole
I: Dermatophytosis, candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor,
secondary infections caused by Gram-positive cocci
A/E: occasional local irritation and burning, also contact
dermatitis; discontinue if sensitization occurs
P/A: 2% Cream or ointment
Dose: Skin infections, apply twice daily,continuing for at least
10 days after the condition has cleared nail infections,
apply 1–2 times daily
Cost: 15g Rs 15-28/-
Clotrimazole
I: Dermatophytosis,oral,cutaneous and vaginal
Candidiasis, Tinea versicolor
A/E: Local Irritation
P/A: Cream 1%;Lotion 1%;100 mg vaginal tablet,1% gel
Dose: Dermatophytosis apply 2-3 times daily for 2-4 weeks
Vaginitis:1 tablet inserted daily for 7 days
Oropharyngeal candidiasis:10 mg troche of clotrimazole
is allowed to dissolve in mouth 3-4 times a day;lotion/
gel is also applied.
Cost: 15g Rs 19-33/-
Ciclopirox olamine
I: Dermatophytosis,Dermatosis,Candidiasis
A/E: Burning Sensation, Itching
