19. The area of the embankment foundation should be kept dry. Test the material (soil)<br />

for its suitability for use in the embankment at least seven days before commencement of<br />

earthwork. Tests should include soil. classification test data and data regarding maximum dry<br />

density, OMC, and CBR (soaked and unsoaked).<br />

20. For widening of existing embankment start earth work from toe line.<br />

21. Do not allow borrow pits within a distance equal to the height of the embankment<br />

subject to a minimum of 1.5 m from the toe of the road embankment.<br />

22. Do not allow construction or other vehicular traffic over the prepared surface of<br />

embankment/ sub-grade.<br />

23. Do not allow dumping of earth from top to widen an existing embankment.<br />

306. SOIL EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL.<br />

306.1 General<br />

This work shall consist of measures as shown on plans or as directed by the Engineer-in-charge<br />

to control soil erosion, sedimentation and water pollution, through use of berms, dikes, sediment basins,<br />

fibre mats, mulches, grasses, slope drains, and other devices.<br />

306.2 Materials<br />

All materials shall meet commercial grade standards and shall be approved by the Engineer-incharge<br />

before being used in the work.<br />

306.3 Construction Operations<br />

Work shall not be started until the erosion/ sedimentation control schedules and methods of<br />

operations for the applicable construction have been approved by the Engineer-in-charge. For above<br />

the contractor shall submit to the Engineer-in-Charge for approval his schedules of work. He shall also<br />

submit for approval his proposed method of erosion/sedimentation control.<br />

307. TURFING WITH SODS<br />

307.1 General<br />

This work shall consist of furnishing and laying of the live sod of perennial turf forming grass on<br />

embankment slopes, verges (earthen shoulders) or other locations shown on the drawings or as<br />

directed by the Engineer-in-charge. Unless otherwise specified, the work shall be taken up as soon as<br />

possible following construction of the embankment, provided the season is favourable for establishment<br />

of the sod.<br />

308 SEEDING AND MULCHING<br />

308.1 General<br />

This shall consist of preparing slopes, placing topsoil, furnishing all seeds, commercial or organic<br />

fertilizers and mulching materials, providing jute netting and placing and incorporating the same on<br />

embankment slopes or other locations designated by the Engineer-in-charge or shown in the Contract<br />

documents.<br />

309 SURFACE/SUB-SURFACE DRAINS<br />

309.1 General<br />

The work shall consist of constructing surface and/or sub-surface drains in accordance with the<br />

requirements of these <strong>Specification</strong>s and to the lines, grades, dimensions and other particulars shown<br />

on the drawings or as directed by the Engineer-in-charge. Schedule of work shall be so arranged that<br />

the drains are completed in proper sequence with road works to ensure that no excavation of the<br />

completed road works is necessary subsequently or any damage is caused to these works due to lack
