406.8 Measurements for Payment<br />

Wet mix macadam shall be measured as finished work in position in cubic meters.<br />

406.9 Rate<br />

The Contract unit rate for wet mix macadam shall be payment in full for carrying out the required operations<br />

including full compensation for all components listed in Clause 401.8.<br />

407 SHOULDERS, ISLANDS AND MEDIANS<br />

407.1 Scope<br />

The work shall consist of constructing shoulder (hard/paved/earthen with brick or stone block edging) on<br />

either side of the pavement, constructing median in the road dividing the carriageway into separate lanes and<br />

constructing islands for channelising the traffic at junctions. In accordance with the requirements of these<br />

<strong>Specification</strong>s. And in conformity with the lines, grades and cross-sections shown on the drawings or as directed<br />

by the Engineer-in-charge.<br />

407.2 Materials<br />

Materials for Shoulder/ median/ islands may be of selected earth/granular material.<br />

When paved shoulders are to be constructed these shall be consist of sub-base, base and surfacing<br />

courses, as shown in the drawings and materials for the same shall conform to relevant <strong>Specification</strong>s of the<br />

corresponding items.<br />

407.3 Size of Shoulders/Medians/Islands<br />

Shoulder (earthen/hard/paved)/median/traffic island dimensions shall be as shown on the approved<br />

drawings or as directed by the Engineer-in-charge.<br />

407.4 Construction Operations<br />

407.4.1 Shoulders: The sequence of operations shall be as below.<br />

The construction of paved shoulder is done in layers each matching the thickness of adjoining<br />

pavement layer. Only after a layer of pavement and corresponding layers in paved and earth shoulder portion<br />

have been laid and compacted, the construction of next layer of pavement and shoulder shall be taken up.<br />

If the materials in adjacent layers are different, these shall be laid together and the pavement layer shall<br />

be compacted first. The corresponding layer in paved shoulder portion shall be compacted thereafter, which<br />

shall be followed by compaction of each shoulder layer. The adjacent layers having same material shall be laid<br />

and compacted together.
