Servo oil system for VBS type CP propeller<br />

The design principle of the servo oil system for<br />

<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s Alpha VBS type CP propeller <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

shown in Fig. 5.18.05.<br />

The VBS system c<strong>on</strong>s<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts of a servo oil tank unit,<br />

the Hydraulic Power Unit, and a coupling flange<br />

with electrical pitch feedback box and oil d<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tributor<br />

ring.<br />

The electrical pitch feedback box c<strong>on</strong>tinuously<br />

measures the positi<strong>on</strong> of the pitch feedback ring<br />

and compares th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> signal with the pitch order signal.<br />

If deviati<strong>on</strong> occurs, a proporti<strong>on</strong>al valve <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> actuated.<br />

Hereby high pressure oil <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> fed to <strong>on</strong>e or the<br />

other side of the servo p<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<strong>on</strong>, via the oil d<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tributor<br />

ring, until the desired propeller pitch has been<br />

reached.<br />

The pitch setting <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> normally remote c<strong>on</strong>trolled,<br />

but local emergency c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible.<br />
