Gas System<br />

In order to make it possible to use the Boil Off<br />

Gas from an LNG Carrier as fuel in low speed<br />

diesels as well, <strong>MAN</strong> B&W has readdressed th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

technology based <strong>on</strong> our ME engine c<strong>on</strong>cept.<br />

The benefits of the greater c<strong>on</strong>trol given tanks to<br />

the ME engine range further enhance the operati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>s for introducing th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> opti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Some years ago, <strong>MAN</strong> B&W developed the MC<br />

range of engines for dual fuel. These were designated<br />

MC�GI (Gas Injecti<strong>on</strong>). The combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

cycle was initiated by the injecti<strong>on</strong> of pilot fuel<br />

oil, followed by the main gas injecti<strong>on</strong>. The fuel<br />

injecti<strong>on</strong> timing <strong>on</strong> these dual fuel engines was<br />

mechanically c<strong>on</strong>trolled, but in the electr<strong>on</strong>ically<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trolled versi<strong>on</strong>, like all ME engines, it can be<br />

user�defined and <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject to greater c<strong>on</strong>trol and<br />

flexibility, thereby allowing the dual fuel c<strong>on</strong>cept to<br />

be further optim<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed.<br />

The efficiency of �GI dual fuel engines <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> the same<br />

as for ordinary ME engines, owing to the diesel<br />

cycle. The system efficiency will be higher than<br />

that of other gas c<strong>on</strong>suming propulsi<strong>on</strong> systems,<br />

incl. the dual fuel diesel electric even when c<strong>on</strong>sidering<br />

the compressor power.<br />

Full redundancy as required by the Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Associati<strong>on</strong> of Classificati<strong>on</strong> Societies’ (IACS) can<br />

be met with <strong>on</strong>e compressor package with either<br />

<strong>on</strong>e reliquefacti<strong>on</strong> unit or <strong>on</strong>e oxidizer as back�up.<br />

The system c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> shown in Fig. 7.00.01.<br />
