Alphatr<strong>on</strong>ic 2000 Propulsi<strong>on</strong> C<strong>on</strong>trol System<br />

<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s Alphatr<strong>on</strong>ic 2000 Propulsi<strong>on</strong> C<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

System (PCS) <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> designed for c<strong>on</strong>trol of propulsi<strong>on</strong><br />

plants based <strong>on</strong> diesel engines with CP propellers.<br />

The plant could for instance include tunnel<br />

gear with PTO/PTI, PTO gear, multiple engines <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong>e gearbox as well as multiple propeller plants.<br />

As shown in Fig. 5.18.07, the propulsi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

system compr<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>es a computer c<strong>on</strong>trolled system<br />

with interc<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s between c<strong>on</strong>trol stati<strong>on</strong>s via<br />

a redundant bus and a hard wired backup c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

system for direct pitch c<strong>on</strong>trol at c<strong>on</strong>stant shaft<br />

speed.<br />

The computer c<strong>on</strong>trolled system c<strong>on</strong>tains functi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for:<br />

• Machinery c<strong>on</strong>trol of engine start/stop, engine<br />

load limits and possible gear clutches.<br />

• Thrust c<strong>on</strong>trol with optimizati<strong>on</strong> of propeller<br />

pitch and shaft speed. Selecti<strong>on</strong> of combinator,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>stant speed or separate thrust mode <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

possible. The rates of changes are c<strong>on</strong>trolled to<br />

ensure smooth manoeuvres and avoidance of<br />

propeller cavitati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• A Load c<strong>on</strong>trol functi<strong>on</strong> protects the engine<br />

against overload. The load c<strong>on</strong>trol functi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tains<br />

a scavenge air smoke limiter, a load programme<br />

for avoidance of high thermal stresses<br />

in the engine, an automatic load reducti<strong>on</strong> and<br />

an engineer c<strong>on</strong>trolled limitati<strong>on</strong> of maximum<br />

load.<br />

• Functi<strong>on</strong>s for transfer of resp<strong>on</strong>sibility between<br />

the local c<strong>on</strong>trol stand, engine c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

room and c<strong>on</strong>trol locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> the bridge are<br />
