More than twenty federal entities,under ten departments or independent agencies, have some resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for invasivespecies management.Coordinated Acti<strong>on</strong>The Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force and the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Invasive Species Council havemade a start in coordinating federal agencies and states. Yet different priorities am<strong>on</strong>g theagencies c<strong>on</strong>strain full cooperati<strong>on</strong> in funding and implementing invasive species programs.The ability to establish cross-agency goals is limited, and neither the Task Force nor theCouncil has established clear performance-oriented objectives in their work plans.Management of invasive species is particularly complicated because the initial sourceof the n<strong>on</strong>-native species, the path of introducti<strong>on</strong>, and the resulting ecological andec<strong>on</strong>omic impacts may be quite far removed from each other. This increases the need forclose coordinati<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g different jurisdicti<strong>on</strong>s.
