Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park SystemThe Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park System, administered by theNati<strong>on</strong>al Park Service, includes a number of nati<strong>on</strong>alparks in coastal or ocean areas, including in Florida,Alaska, Maine, Michigan, California, U.S. VirginIslands, and American Samoa. (About 6,000 of these stati<strong>on</strong>s aretelemetered by an Earth-satellite-based communicati<strong>on</strong>ssystem.) This effort has made c<strong>on</strong>siderableprogress toward assessing current waterquality c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s and l<strong>on</strong>g-term trends.Web: .Nati<strong>on</strong>al Wildlife Refuge SystemThe Nati<strong>on</strong>al Wildlife Refuge System, administeredby the USFWS, encompasses over 95 milli<strong>on</strong> acres<strong>on</strong> more than 540 refuges and waterfowl producti<strong>on</strong>areas dedicated to the protecti<strong>on</strong> and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> ofthe nati<strong>on</strong>’s wildlife resources. In 1966, legislati<strong>on</strong>(Pub. L. 89–669; 16 U.S.C. § 668dd) codified thesystem, which was first established by executiveorder of President Theodore Roosevelt as a networkof wildlife refuges and ranges, areas for the protecti<strong>on</strong>and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of fish and wildlife threatenedwith extincti<strong>on</strong>, game ranges, wildlife managementareas, and waterfowl producti<strong>on</strong> areas.Web: .Nati<strong>on</strong>al Stream QualityAccounting NetworkUSGS c<strong>on</strong>ducts l<strong>on</strong>g-term water quality and quantitym<strong>on</strong>itoring through the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Stream QualityAccounting Network at fixed locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> largerivers around the country. Currently, this programfocuses <strong>on</strong> m<strong>on</strong>itoring the water quality of the nati<strong>on</strong>’slargest rivers—the Mississippi, Columbia, Colorado,Rio Grande, and Yuk<strong>on</strong>.
