The Opening SceneCaterina has found a job as an editorial assistant atThe Greensburg Gazette. Mack Pellis, the newspaper’seditor, is giving her instructions in the publication’sstorefront office.Check the FaxMR.PELLIS: Cathy, I have to go see my lawyer. Takecare of the office while I’m gone—and make sureyou don’t get conned into buying something from atelemarketer or a door-to-door salesperson, okay?CATERINA: Sure, Mr. Pellis, no problem.(Immediately after Mr. Pellis disappears out the door,Mr. Bronowski enters the office.)MR.BRONOWSKI: Hello. I’d like to place an ad in yourpaper.CATERINA: No problem. What’s the ad for?MR.BRONOWSKI: I have a fax machine to sell.CATERINA: A fax machine? Mr. Pellis, my boss, wasjust saying he needs a new fax machine becausesomebody stole the last one he had. What are youasking for it?MR.BRONOWSKI: Well, I don’t know if I can sell it toyou. You look kind of young.CATERINA: That has nothing to do with it. I work forMr. Pellis, so I’d be buying it for him.MR.BRONOWSKI: Well, I can’t take less than $200.CATERINA: Sold.MR.BRONOWSKI: Just like that?CATERINA: Sure.MR.BRONOWSKI: Well, I guess it’s okay.(Caterina goes to the back room and gets $200 incash out of Mr. Pellis’s desk. Mr. Bronowski fetchesthe fax machine from his car, takes the money, andleaves. Mr. Pellis returns 30 minutes later.)MR.PELLIS: Where did this fax machine come from?CATERINA: I bought it to replace the stolen one.(With concern on his face, Mr. Pellis examines themachine.)MR.PELLIS: I don’t believe it!CATERINA: I know. It was only $200. Great deal,right?MR.PELLIS: That’s not what I mean. This fax machineright here, the one you just bought with my hardearnedmoney . . .CATERINA: (Interrupting.)
