Not all of the specieswith a broad host range are found everywhere, for example in NewZealand C. alienum is commonly associated with cultivated fruits, whereas species such as C. siamense and C. fructicola, commonon these same cultivated fruits in other parts of the world, have notbeen reported from New Zealand.TaxonomyBased on results of the multigene concatenated BI phylogenies,we accept 22 species plus one subspecies within the C.gloeosporioides complex. Isolates authentic for G. cingulata “f.sp. camelliae” form a genetically distinct group, but this is notformally named because of doubts over its relationship to C.camelliae. Based on DNA sequence comparisons, a few otherisolates almost certainly represent additional unnamed species. We do not formally describe them because most are known froma single isolate, often stale, with little understanding of either theirmorphological or biological diversity. In the Musae clade theseinclude ICMP 18614 and ICMP 18616, both from grape fromJapan, and ICMP 18726 from pawpaw from the Cook Islands, and in the Kahawae clade ICMP 18699 from chestnut from Japan. These isolates are not included in the phylogenies in this study,www.studiesinmycology.org127
