No typewas designated, and the name was validated three years later(Simmonds 1968) with designation of a holotype, IMI 117617 fromCarica papaya, and paratypes from C. papaya (IMI 117618 - IMI117621), Capsicum frutescens (IMI 117622), and Delphinium sp.(IMI 117623).Vinnere et al. (2002) sequenced the ITS region of the holotypespecimen (AF411700) and one paratype specimen IMI 117619(AF411701) and found m<strong>or</strong>phological and cultural differencesbetween Simmonds’s six holotype/paratype specimens of C.acutatum. There is no living ex-holotype culture available, but twoex-paratype strains, one from Carica papaya (IMI 117620 = QDPI&Fplant disease log book no. 16633D = ATCC 56816 = <strong>CBS</strong> 112996= STE-U 5292) and one from Capsicum frutescens (IMI 117622= QDPI&F plant disease log book no. 11711A = <strong>CBS</strong> 292.67, seeC. brisbanense) and an ex-topotype strain from Carica papaya(QDPI&F plant disease log book no. 13483-0 = <strong>CBS</strong> 294.67, seeC. simmondsii) do exist in a living state.Than et al. (2008b) epitypified C. acutatum with a strain fromCarica papaya from the region in which the <strong>species</strong> was firstcollected (BRIP 28519 = <strong>CBS</strong> 122122). Not only was this actioninadvisable bearing in mind that living cultures from two paratypesstill exist, it was regrettable as it was subsequently discoveredthat their epitype was not conspecific with the type. Followingan ITS and TUB2 analysis of the clade, Shivas & Tan (2009)described C. acutatum sensu Than et al. (2008b) as a separate<strong>species</strong>, C. simmondsii. They did not designate a further epitypef<strong>or</strong> C. acutatum, but bearing in mind that only the ITS region ofthe holotype was sequenced, we feel that it is imp<strong>or</strong>tant to fix theapplication of that <strong>species</strong> name with an appropriate epitype thatcan be subject to multigene analysis. This has been done above,with one of Simmond’s <strong>or</strong>iginal paratypes chosen f<strong>or</strong> this purpose.<strong>Colletotrichum</strong> acutatum s. str. causes diseases of a wide rangeof unrelated plants, some of which are economically significant,including papaya (Carica papaya), strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa), pine (Pinus spp.), Hakea spp. and rooibos (Aspalathuslinearis). Two of these are associated with recognition of f<strong>or</strong>maespeciales. These are not accepted as a taxonomic rank in theInternational Code of Nomenclature f<strong>or</strong> Algae, Fungi and Plants(ICN) as they are based on fungus/plant interactions rather thansingle <strong>species</strong>, and f<strong>or</strong>mal ICN-compliant taxa cannot use f<strong>or</strong>maespeciales as basionyms f<strong>or</strong> new combinations.<strong>Colletotrichum</strong> acutatum f. sp. pinea (Dingley & Gilmour 1972)was described f<strong>or</strong> a malady of pines called terminal crook disease,with the fungus apparently causing malf<strong>or</strong>mation of growing tips.We have examined authentic cultures derived from Dingley &Gilmour’s w<strong>or</strong>k, which were also used by von Arx. Most of thesecannot be distinguished in m<strong>or</strong>phological <strong>or</strong> molecular termsfrom C. acutatum s. str., but strain <strong>CBS</strong> 436.77 (from Chile, notfrom New Zealand as are the authentic cultures of C. acutatumf. sp. pinea), belongs to a quite different <strong>species</strong> outside of the C.acutatum <strong>species</strong> <strong>complex</strong> (see C. pseudoacutatum). <strong>CBS</strong> 797.72appears to show evidence of hybrid <strong>or</strong>igin and is not included in themolecular analyses (see below).<strong>Colletotrichum</strong> acutatum f. sp. hakeae (Lubbe et al. 2004) wasintroduced f<strong>or</strong> an apparently strongly host-specific set of strains,one of which was being used as a potential biological controlagent (M<strong>or</strong>ris 1982, G<strong>or</strong>don & Fourie 2011), but we have notfound any m<strong>or</strong>phological differences and there are few sequencebaseddifferences (1 bp difference in ITS, 2 bp differences inHIS3) between these and other C. acutatum s. str. strains. Wetheref<strong>or</strong>e do not feel confident to recognise this f<strong>or</strong>ma specialison that basis as a segregate <strong>species</strong>. <strong>Colletotrichum</strong> acutatum f.sp. chromogenum was described by Baxter et al. (1983), basedon strains from olive referred to as Gloeosp<strong>or</strong>ium fructigenum f.sp. chromogenum by G<strong>or</strong>ter (1962), f<strong>or</strong> strains producing pink topurple pigments in culture. Such pigment production is commonthroughout the C. acutatum <strong>complex</strong> (e.g. Polashock et al. 2009)and is especially prominent in C. acutatum s. str. (as their cladeA5) acc<strong>or</strong>ding to Sreenivasaprasad & Talhinhas (2005). In fact theonly strain from olive in South Africa included in this study (<strong>CBS</strong>127589) belongs to this <strong>species</strong> and could represent C. acutatumf. sp. chromogenum. But whatever the case, the rank used isinappropriate f<strong>or</strong> this purpose.A variety of C. acutatum, described on Fi<strong>or</strong>inia externa (a scaleinsect), C. acutatum var. fi<strong>or</strong>iniae (Marcelino et al. 2008), wasrecognised as the separate <strong>species</strong> C. fi<strong>or</strong>iniae by Shivas & Tan(2009) and is included below in this study.A sexual m<strong>or</strong>ph was described f<strong>or</strong> C. acutatum (Guerber &C<strong>or</strong>rell 1997, 2001), based on mating compatible strains in thelab<strong>or</strong>at<strong>or</strong>y. The cross designated as type of Glomerella acutatawas based on two cultures, ATCC 56816 and ATCC MYA-662. Thefirst of these is derived from one of Simmonds’ <strong>or</strong>iginal Queenslandcollections from papaya, IMI 117620 (here designated as epitypeof C. acutatum). There is ongoing confusion regarding theprovenance of this strain, however; Guerber & C<strong>or</strong>rell (2001) andThan et al. (2008b) wrongly equated ATCC 56816 with IMI 117617,the holotype, and that congruence is rec<strong>or</strong>ded as such in the ATCCcatalogue. The second strain ATCC MYA-662 was isolated fromapple in Louisiana, USA (Guerber & C<strong>or</strong>rell 2001), and is hereassigned to C. fi<strong>or</strong>iniae in clade 3. Fertile sexual m<strong>or</strong>phs were alsoproduced by Guerber & C<strong>or</strong>rell (2001) and Guerber et al. (2003)by mating a series of different strains, including crosses betweenparents that are both assigned to C. fi<strong>or</strong>iniae. None of the strainstested was self-fertile.The holotype of Glomerella acutata is theref<strong>or</strong>e an interspecifichybrid between C. acutatum and C. fi<strong>or</strong>iniae. This might be construedas strong evidence that these two taxa constitute a single biological<strong>species</strong>, and theref<strong>or</strong>e that the <strong>species</strong> concepts used in this paperare much too narrow.
