Cannon et al.A further important activity for the Colletotrichum community is toestablish a robust phylogeny-based online identification system withbarcode reference sequences from ex-type or other verified materialthat can be queried using Blast tools, as a rigorous alternative to theuncurated data set accessible in GenBank. A preliminary system hasalready been set up by the CBS-KNAW Fungal Biodiversity Centrebased on the multilocus sequence data listed in Table 3 (http://www.cbs.knaw.nl/colletotrichum). In addition to sequences, it will alsoinclude morphological and cultural characters and pictures of eachspecies facilitating comprehensive polyphasic identification. Methodsused to collect the data are explained, and cultures are listed alongwith ecological data available. This database will be updated as newtaxa are discovered and typifications completed by members of theSubcommission on Colletotrichum.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSJoAnne Crouch is thanked for her detailed review of the draft manuscript, especiallyin the sections devoted to genetics and speciation. Barbara Ritchie and Jim Wallerare also thanked for providing images of disease symptoms.REFERENCESAbang MM, Winter S, Green KR, Hoffmann P, Mignouna HD, et al. (2002).
