These records contain original German­language documents (some<br />

with English translations) relating to medical experiments <strong>and</strong> other mis­<br />

treatment of <strong>concentration</strong> <strong>camp</strong> inmates. They were originally collected<br />

for possible use in war crimes trials <strong>and</strong> include material confiscated from<br />

Dr. Paul Nitsche by the U.S. Army in Austria. Documents in this series were<br />

stored in Heidelberg, Germany, before they were retired to Washington,<br />

<strong>and</strong> became known as the “Heidelberg Documents.” The series is arranged<br />

sequentially by unidentified numbers with Mauthausen materials identi­<br />

tions of the deposition of Franz Ziereis, Comm<strong>and</strong>ant of Mauthausen,<br />

made on his deathbed on May 23, 1945.<br />

Describes murder installations at Mauthausen including gas cham­<br />

ber <strong>and</strong> gas­car; injections, medical experiments, <strong>and</strong> killing by torture:<br />

<strong>and</strong> descriptions of Hartheim Castle, located at Alkoven, Austria, where<br />

prisoners were killed by injections.<br />
