The majority of cases involving <strong>concentration</strong> <strong>camp</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> labor <strong>and</strong> prison<br />

<strong>camp</strong>s are filed under 000­50, followed by a country code (in this case “5” for<br />

Austria) <strong>and</strong> “volume” number. Each “volume” refers to a specific trial. Cases<br />

relating to Mauthausen Concentration Camp <strong>and</strong> its sub­<strong>camp</strong>s are filed under<br />

000­50­5 through 000­50­5­51 (Entry A1 2238, boxes 334–424, location:<br />

290/59/05/04).An index to the“Cases Tried”consists of 3­ by 5­inch index cards<br />

identifying individuals (suspects, witnesses, <strong>and</strong> victims) involved in war crimes<br />

investigations <strong>and</strong> trials. Cards are arranged alphabetically by surname <strong>and</strong> pro­<br />

vide name, birth date, occupation, address, <strong>and</strong> present location. A complete<br />

list of defendants, arranged by ETO case number, is provided in Appendix A,<br />

below.<br />

War crimes case files generally include records of trial (detail for the court,<br />

charge sheet, trial transcript, statement of sentence, <strong>and</strong> prosecution <strong>and</strong><br />

defense exhibits, with English­language translations when necessary), peti­<br />

tions for clemency <strong>and</strong> review, Review <strong>and</strong> Recommendation, War Crimes<br />

Boards of Review, <strong>and</strong> War Crimes Modification Board reviews of individ­<br />

ual sentences. Files on individual defendants include petitions for clemen­<br />

cy, review <strong>and</strong> parole, <strong>and</strong> in some cases, parolee case files. When a file is<br />

incomplete, the researcher is referred to the near­duplicate copies of<br />

Mauthausen “Cases Tried” in Record Group 153 (see III.14 above).<br />

ETO Case 000­Mauthausen­1, U.S. v. Eduard Erb, was tried at Dachau,<br />

Germany, during the period March 25–April 2, 1947, before a General<br />

Military Government Court. The defendant, a Waffen SS sergeant, was<br />

accused of participating in the killing of inmates at Mauthausen<br />

Concentration Camp <strong>and</strong> sub­<strong>camp</strong>s Schwechat <strong>and</strong> St. Valentin. As<br />

approved by the reviewing authority, he was sentenced to life in prison.<br />
