USA 796–Interrogation of Johann K<strong>and</strong>uth, Nov. 30, 1945, at Salzburg,<br />

Austria, regarding the execution of American <strong>and</strong> British prisoners of war at<br />

Mauthausen on or about Jan. 24, 1945. K<strong>and</strong>uth was a prisoner at Mauthausen<br />

from Mar. 1939 to May 1945 <strong>and</strong> worked at the <strong>camp</strong> crematorium. Original,<br />

USA 797–Affidavit of Hans Marsalet, Apr. 8, 1946, providing an eyewitness<br />

account of the deathbed testimony of Franz Ziereis, Comm<strong>and</strong>ant of<br />

Mauthausen. Marsalet was an inmate at Mauthausen from Sept. 1942 to May<br />

1945, working as a <strong>camp</strong> clerk. According to his account, Ziereis was shot<br />

by American soldiers on May 22, 1945, while trying to escape, was seriously<br />

wounded by three bullets, <strong>and</strong> died the following day at the Gusen <strong>camp</strong> hos­<br />

pital. Original, signed German­language document with English translation,<br />
