USA 796–Interrogation of Johann Kanduth, Nov. 30, 1945, at Salzburg,
Austria, regarding the execution of American and British prisoners of war at
Mauthausen on or about Jan. 24, 1945. Kanduth was a prisoner at Mauthausen
from Mar. 1939 to May 1945 and worked at the camp crematorium. Original,

USA 797–Affidavit of Hans Marsalet, Apr. 8, 1946, providing an eyewitness
account of the deathbed testimony of Franz Ziereis, Commandant of
Mauthausen. Marsalet was an inmate at Mauthausen from Sept. 1942 to May
1945, working as a camp clerk. According to his account, Ziereis was shot
by American soldiers on May 22, 1945, while trying to escape, was seriously
wounded by three bullets, and died the following day at the Gusen camp hos­
