390/17/25/07); the 59th Field Hospital took over from the 130th <strong>and</strong> 131st<br />

Evacuation Hospitals on June 15,establishing <strong>and</strong> supervising three hospital units<br />

to provide medical care for displaced persons remaining in the vicinity of<br />

Mauthausen <strong>and</strong> Gusen I <strong>and</strong> to prepare as many patients as possible for rapid<br />

repatriation (Box 413,location: 390/17/26/01).The evacuation hospitals were sup­<br />

ported by the 610th Medical Clearing Company,which arrived at the Mauthausen<br />

main <strong>camp</strong> on May 12 <strong>and</strong> remained until June 20. The company’s June 30, 1945,<br />

periodic report (Box 371, location: 390/17/25/01) provides a detailed physical<br />

description of the <strong>camp</strong>, health conditions, medical facilities, <strong>and</strong> treatments.<br />

Annual reports of the 139th Evacuation Hospital (Box 409) <strong>and</strong> the 30th Field<br />

Hospital (Box 412, location: 390/17/25/07) document conditions at the<br />

Mauthausen sub­<strong>camp</strong> Ebensee <strong>and</strong> treatment of survivors from May 9 through<br />

June 23, when the last patients were evacuated to a civilian hospital in Bad Ischl.<br />

Austria; policy recommendations for treatment procedures; <strong>and</strong> an August 9,<br />

1945, Typhus Commission statistical report on the typhus outbreak in Wels.<br />

III.12 The Office of the Judge Advocate General (JAG), War Crimes Branch,<br />

was established in October 1944 to coordinate U.S. activities with respect to<br />

investigation <strong>and</strong> prosecution of war crimes <strong>and</strong> criminals. <strong>Records</strong> relat­<br />

ing to World War II include case files <strong>and</strong> dossiers for the 489 war crimes<br />

trials in Europe tried by U.S. Army courts.<br />
