The books provide death number, nationality, inmate number, name, date<br />

<strong>and</strong> place of birth, <strong>and</strong> cause, date, <strong>and</strong> time of death. Also included are<br />

202 unbound sheets giving daily death totals <strong>and</strong> transfers into <strong>and</strong> out of<br />

Special Death Book of Men Who Died at Mauthausen <strong>and</strong> Gusen, April<br />

22–27, 1945. This book contains about 600 German­language death cer­<br />

tificates in a loosely bound volume, each giving name, inmate number,<br />

date <strong>and</strong> place of birth, profession, <strong>and</strong> date, place <strong>and</strong> cause of death.<br />

“Exekutionen K.L.M.” This bound, h<strong>and</strong>written ledger records execu­<br />

tions at Mauthausen, 1940–45. The volume is arranged alphabetically by<br />

family name, giving nationality, date of execution, <strong>and</strong> in some cases,<br />

reason for execution. The red “K” signifies “Kugel Aktion” against pris­<br />

oners of war allegedly caught trying to escape. (PS 497)<br />

Opposite: A rare 1942 image of Spanish inmates pulling a dirt­laden wagon in Wiener Graben (Vienna<br />

Ditch), the stone quarry at Mauthausen. The photograph is one of those secretly salvaged by Spanish<br />

photojournalist <strong>and</strong> inmate Francois Boix <strong>and</strong> later submitted as a prosecution exhibit in the war crimes<br />
