come, recording 365 deaths. G­1 weekly reports for the same period cite staff<br />

strength. Bronze Star Metals were awarded to Lt. Col. John G. Baxter, Maj.<br />

Chester H. Allen, Maj. Charles B. Roesch, 1st Sgt. Willis R. Wood, S.Sgt.<br />

Kenneth D. Caplener, S.Sgt. Earl Willins, <strong>and</strong> Pfc. Russel C. Everson for mer­<br />

itorious service to the unit at Mauthausen by Headquarters, XII Corps,<br />

General Order No. 49, June 14, 1945 (212­1.3).<br />

A report of the 80th Infantry Division Medical Department, January–June<br />

1945 (380­26), provides an overview of medical conditions prevailing among<br />

displaced persons concentrated in the vicinity of Ebensee at the time of lib­<br />

eration.<br />

An October 25, 1945, operations report of the 30th Field Hospital<br />

(MDFH­30­0.3) describes the establishment of three hospitalization units<br />

at the site of Ebensee sub­<strong>camp</strong> on May 9, 1945; the establishment of a Typhus<br />

Diagnosis Center in Traun, Austria, on May 16; <strong>and</strong> the treatment of former<br />

<strong>camp</strong> inmates to June 23, when all remaining cases were transferred to an<br />

Austrian civilian hospital in Bad Ischl. Attached G­1 Weekly Periodic Reports,<br />

June 17–23, 1945, provide statistics on medical staff strength. Operation<br />

reports of the 171st Medical Battalion, May 1945 (MDBN­117­0.3), provide<br />

details on the deployment of personnel <strong>and</strong> vehicles, patient statistics, <strong>and</strong><br />

medical treatments at hospital facilities in the vicinities of Linz, Lambach,<br />

Ebensee, Wels, <strong>and</strong> Neubau, Austria. The history of the 121st Evacuation<br />

Hospital (MDEH­121­0.1) documents the establishment of a hospital in Linz,<br />

Austria, on May 8 to treat displaced persons in Linz <strong>and</strong> Neubau. Photographs<br />

of air ambulances <strong>and</strong> the hospital in Neubau are included.<br />

III.60 Combat Interviews are a discrete series of eyewitness accounts of sig­<br />

nificant World War II military actions. The 11th Armored Division combat<br />

interviews for April–May 1945 (Entry 427, Folder CI 310, box 24103, loca­<br />

tion: 270/65/6/6) mainly describe troop movements into Austria, with a<br />
