III.55 Records of the Office of the Director of Intelligence include World
War II military intelligence photographic interpretation (MIPI) reports.
The MIPI index (Entry 216) consists of 3­ by 5­inch cards arranged by
country and thereunder by place name. Index cards for Austria are filed
in boxes 69–73 (location: 190/66/34/03). MIPI Reports (Entry 217) are
arranged by report number. MIPI reports for Austria include aerial pho­
tographs and textual descriptions of transportation networks and indus­
trial sites connected to Mauthausen and its sub­camps. A complete search
of these MIPI reports was not made for this publication. Two sample
reports are described below:
MIPI Report 44165: Railroads at Krems­Mauthausen­St. Valentin
describes the single track, steam­operated railroad running north of the
Danube River linking the above sites. An annotated map and six black­
and­white photographs, dated Sept.–Nov. 1944, show aerial views of the
railroad bridges, viaduct spans, and other vulnerable features along the

MIPI Report 45848: Underground Activity at Linz/St. Georgen
describes in detail three large complexes of underground and sur­
face activity at St. Georgen, Gusen, and Langenstein, Austria, from
Nov. 1943 to Sept. 1944. The textual report includes descriptions of
tunnels and tunnel entrances, railway connections among the work
sites and to Mauthausen, noticeable new construction, and labor
camps. Eight black­and­white photographs, dated Aug. 22, 1944,
show aerial views of the three complexes. Two topographic maps,
dated Jan. 1945, show industrial buildings, rail and power lines, and
tunnel entrances in the Linz/St. Georgen/Gusen/ Mauthausen area.
