III.55 <strong>Records</strong> of the Office of the Director of Intelligence include World<br />

War II military intelligence photographic interpretation (MIPI) reports.<br />

The MIPI index (Entry 216) consists of 3­ by 5­inch cards arranged by<br />

country <strong>and</strong> thereunder by place name. Index cards for Austria are filed<br />

in boxes 69–73 (location: 190/66/34/03). MIPI Reports (Entry 217) are<br />

arranged by report number. MIPI reports for Austria include aerial pho­<br />

tographs <strong>and</strong> textual descriptions of transportation networks <strong>and</strong> indus­<br />

trial sites connected to Mauthausen <strong>and</strong> its sub­<strong>camp</strong>s. A complete search<br />

of these MIPI reports was not made for this publication. Two sample<br />

reports are described below:<br />

MIPI Report 44165: Railroads at Krems­Mauthausen­St. Valentin<br />

describes the single track, steam­operated railroad running north of the<br />

Danube River linking the above sites. An annotated map <strong>and</strong> six black­<br />

<strong>and</strong>­white photographs, dated Sept.–Nov. 1944, show aerial views of the<br />

railroad bridges, viaduct spans, <strong>and</strong> other vulnerable features along the<br />

track. (Box 467, location: 190/67/08/01)<br />

MIPI Report 45848: Underground Activity at Linz/St. Georgen<br />

describes in detail three large <strong>complex</strong>es of underground <strong>and</strong> sur­<br />

face activity at St. Georgen, Gusen, <strong>and</strong> Langenstein, Austria, from<br />

Nov. 1943 to Sept. 1944. The textual report includes descriptions of<br />

tunnels <strong>and</strong> tunnel entrances, railway connections among the work<br />

sites <strong>and</strong> to Mauthausen, noticeable new construction, <strong>and</strong> labor<br />

<strong>camp</strong>s. Eight black­<strong>and</strong>­white photographs, dated Aug. 22, 1944,<br />

show aerial views of the three <strong>complex</strong>es. Two topographic maps,<br />

dated Jan. 1945, show industrial buildings, rail <strong>and</strong> power lines, <strong>and</strong><br />

tunnel entrances in the Linz/St. Georgen/Gusen/ Mauthausen area.<br />
