European Place Name Index, 1944–1949 (Entry 141A)<br />

Individual cards include the place name, the name <strong>and</strong> status of the indi­<br />

vidual referred to in the document that contains the place name, the num­<br />

ber of the file containing the document, <strong>and</strong> a summary of the contents of<br />

the document. Arranged alphabetically by the name of the place in Europe<br />

where war crimes took place. (Boxes 1–10, location: 270/01/13/01)<br />

Name Index to ETO War Crimes Trials (Entry 141D)<br />

Individual cards include the name of the war crimes trial defendant, the<br />

trial designation, <strong>and</strong> JAG <strong>and</strong> ETO case file numbers. Arranged alphabeti­<br />

cally by name of defendant. (Boxes 1–2, location: 270/10/13/02)<br />

Individual cards include the individual’s name; his status as accused, wit­<br />

ness, or victim; the name of the case file that refers to the individual; <strong>and</strong> a<br />

brief summary of the pertinent documents in the file. (Boxes 1–72, location:<br />

III.14 War Crimes Branch Case Files, 1944–1949 (Entry 143)<br />

Each case file contains information about a specific war crime or group of<br />

war crimes. Included are correspondence, trial records <strong>and</strong> transcripts, inves­<br />

tigatory material such as interrogation reports <strong>and</strong> trial exhibits, clemency<br />

petitions <strong>and</strong> reviews, photographs of atrocities, <strong>and</strong> published material such<br />

as newspaper clippings <strong>and</strong> pamphlets. Country code 5 (Austria) contains 160<br />

case files. <strong>Records</strong> pertaining to the Mauthausen proceedings are filed under<br />

Case File 5­31, volumes 1 through 61. Each “volume” documents an individ­<br />

ual case involving one or more defendants, <strong>and</strong> is identified by an ETO<br />

(European Theater of Operations) Case Number that refers to a parallel <strong>and</strong><br />

generally more complete series of Mauthausen trial records in Record Group<br />

549 (see III.78 below). A complete list of the Mauthausen defendants is includ­<br />
