pages, typewritten in French) submitted by the French Ministry of Justice<br />

to the JAG War Crimes Branch, chiefly citing the text from Franz Ziereis’s<br />

Prosecution Exhibit #153: Among the 71 photographs included as pros­<br />

ecution exhibits in the Mauthausen main <strong>camp</strong> trial, 30 (b&w, 7 by 9 in.)<br />

are attributed to Boix <strong>and</strong> identified by captions <strong>and</strong> dates on the reverse<br />

side in Boix’s h<strong>and</strong>writing. Most are dated 1942 or 1943. Subjects include<br />

views of Mauthausen <strong>and</strong> sub­<strong>camp</strong> Gusen, atrocities (executions, inmates<br />

shot while trying to escape, grave sites), <strong>and</strong> Russian prisoners of war. Also<br />

included are February 2, 1945, photos of Russian Block 20, scene of an<br />

attempted mass escape, <strong>and</strong> a photo of the dead in the Russian lager dated<br />

on the life of Boix, directed by Llorenc Soler <strong>and</strong> based on the historical<br />

research of Benito Bermejo Sanchez. (With English subtitles, a gift to NARA<br />

from Bermejo Sanchez)<br />

Francisco Boix, el fotografo de Mauthausen by Benito Bermejo Sanchéz<br />

(Barcelona, 2002), subtitled “Photographs of Francisco Boix <strong>and</strong> the cap­<br />

tured archive of the SS at Mauthausen,” this Spanish­language book repro­<br />

duced many of the Boix photographs, including those from NARA, with the<br />

story of Boix’s life. (A gift from Bermejo Sanchez)<br />

II.4 Investigative <strong>Records</strong> of the Dawes Mission<br />

In September <strong>and</strong> October 1944, a group of 21 U.S. military <strong>and</strong> civilian per­<br />

sonnel, members of the 2677th Regiment, Office of Strategic Services, were<br />

flown from Bari, Italy, to Tri Duby, Slovakia. These men were engaged in an<br />
