inal death books of Gusen Concentration Camp for use in the Mauthausen trials<br />

(Box 85). The Gusen death books were originally filed under this PS number.The four<br />

volumes are now filed with records of the Mauthausen case U.S. v. Hans Altfuldisch<br />

et al. (ETO Case No. 000­50­5) as trial exhibits P­23 to P­26. See III.78 below.<br />

PS 496–Special Death Book of Men Who Died at Mauthausen <strong>and</strong> Gusen, Apr.<br />

22–27, 1945.About 600 original German­language death certificates in a loose­<br />

ly bound volume, each giving name, inmate number, date <strong>and</strong> place of birth,<br />

profession, date <strong>and</strong> place of death, <strong>and</strong> cause of death. Most include a signed<br />

medical receipt verifying the cause of death. Very fragile condition. (Box 85)<br />

PS 497–A bound, alphabetical ledger, entitled “Exekutionen K.L.M.” with<br />

h<strong>and</strong>written entries recording executions, 1940–45, at Mauthausen<br />

Concentration Camp. The volume is arranged alphabetically by first letter<br />

of the family name, giving nationality, date of execution, <strong>and</strong> in some cas­<br />

es, reason for execution. The red “K” appears in the latter column in some<br />

instances, signifying “Kugel Aktion” taken against a prisoner of war who was<br />

caught trying to escape. (Box 86)<br />
