Military Government Court. The case concerned 12 defendants accused of<br />

participating in the operations of Mauthausen Concentration Camp <strong>and</strong> its<br />

sub­<strong>camp</strong>s <strong>and</strong> thereby, on the principle of common design, implicated in<br />

mass atrocities <strong>and</strong> other war crimes. All of the accused, listed below, were<br />

members of the SS.<br />

Theo­Otto Bernhardt – Waffen SS master sergeant, canteen manager at<br />

Mauthausen<br />

Johann Domis – Waffen SS sergeant, courier for the guards, orderly,<br />

inmate property room at Mauthausen<br />

Paul Hackl (served but not tried)<br />

Emil Hub (A nolle prosequi was entered in favor of the accused.)<br />

Hans Clemens Jung – Waffen SS sergeant, guard, financial administra­<br />

tion office at Mauthausen<br />

Karl Kuehn – Waffen SS sergeant, telephone switchboard <strong>and</strong> bread store<br />

at Gusen, food store at Mauthausen<br />

Heinrich Karl Luetscher – Waffen SS technical sergeant, guard <strong>and</strong> clerk,<br />

orderly at Mauthausen<br />

Reinhard Josef Purucker – Waffen SS master sergeant, inmate kitchen at<br />

Mauthausen <strong>and</strong> Gusen I<br />

Xaver Strauss – Waffen SS captain, administration leader responsible for<br />

transporting, accommodating, <strong>and</strong> feeding troops <strong>and</strong> inmates at<br />

Mauthausen<br />

Walter Truckenbrodt (A nollo prosequi was entered in favor of the accused.)<br />

Bernard Fritz Wagner – Waffen SS guard <strong>and</strong> administrator of billeting<br />

<strong>and</strong> laundry at Mauthausen<br />

Ewald Wlotzka – Waffen SS sergeant, guard <strong>and</strong> <strong>camp</strong> administrator in<br />

charge of food storerooms at Mauthausen<br />

Hub, Hackl, <strong>and</strong> Truckenbrodt were not brought to trial. As approved by the<br />

reviewing authority, Domis, Kuehn, <strong>and</strong> Luetscher were sentenced to 3 years<br />

in prison; Jung <strong>and</strong> Wagner to 5 years; Bernhardt to 10 years; <strong>and</strong> Strauss to<br />

life. Purucker <strong>and</strong> Wlotzka were sentenced to death.<br />
