III.8 The Office of the Surgeon General (Army) (SGO) administers the Army<br />

Medical Department <strong>and</strong> exercises general oversight <strong>and</strong> control over all<br />

aspects of army health services.<br />

III.9 SGO World War II Administrative <strong>Records</strong>: Geographic Series, 1945–1946<br />

(Entry 31, box 1377, location: 390/15/30/05)<br />

The Geographic Series includes 11th Armored Division sanitation reports<br />

(May 24 <strong>and</strong> June 1, 1945) on Mauthausen. These describe conditions prevail­<br />

ing at the time of liberation <strong>and</strong> the establishment of medical care <strong>and</strong> sanita­<br />

tion facilities under the direction of the 130th <strong>and</strong> 131st Evacuation Hospitals<br />

<strong>and</strong> other support medical groups. Sanitation reports of the 131st Evacuation<br />

Hospital, May–June 1945 (Box 1395, location: 390/15/31/06), provide evalua­<br />

tions of environmental sanitation, personal hygiene, nutrition, <strong>and</strong> disease<br />

management, <strong>and</strong> in particular, steps to prevent the spread of venereal disease,<br />

typhus, <strong>and</strong> tuberculosis. Reports cover the Mauthausen main <strong>camp</strong>, sub­<strong>camp</strong><br />

Gusen #1, the “Russian Camp,” <strong>and</strong> Women’s Hospital Area. Some reports<br />

include name lists of medical personnel, some of whom were physicians drawn<br />

from the ranks of former Mauthausen prisoners.<br />

The Unit Annual Reports include 1945 annual reports for medical units post­<br />

ed at components of the Mauthausen <strong>complex</strong>.The131st Evacuation Hospital fur­<br />
