The Life of the Prophet Muhammad by Ibn Kathir - Volume 2 of 4

"'Then came the Prophet (SAAS); and I never saw the people of Medina so
happy as they were to see him. So much so that the slave girls sang out, "The
Messenger of God (SAAS) has come!" And he did not arrive until after I had
read the verse in the Qur'm: "Glorify the name of your Lord most high!" @rat
al-A%; LXXXVII), along with other verses from al-M~fa~~al~t.'"~~
Muslim related this in his jahih collection from an hadith of Isra'il from Aba
Ishaq, from al-Bar3 b. 'Azih, in similar words.
In it there is the assertion that Sa'd b. Aba Waqqas emigrated before the
arrival of the Messenger of God (SAAS) in Medina. Miisa b. Wqba, quoting
al-Zuhri, claimed that he emigrated only after the Messenger of God (SAAS);
the information that precedes this however, is correct.
Ibn Ishaq stated, "When 'Umar b. al-Khatyab and members of his family came
to Medina, they included his brother Zayd b. al-Khattab, 'Amr and 'Abd All*,
the two sons of Suraqa b. al-Muctamir, Khumays b. Hudhafa al-Sahmi, husband
ofhis daughter Hafsa, his cousin Sacid b. Zayd b. 'Amr b. Nufayl, Waqid h. 'Abd
Allah al-Tamimi, an ally of theirs, Khawla b. Aba Khawla and Mdik b. Abii
Khawla, two allies of theirs from the Bana Ijl, (and from) the Banii al-Bakayr,
Ilyas, and Khalid, and 'Aqil and 'Amir, and their allies from the Bana Sa'd b.
Layth. They took up residence with Rifa'a 'Abd al-Mundhir b. Zunayr among
the Bana 'Amr h. 'Awf at Quha)."
Ibn Ishaq stated, "Then the emigrants, God bless them, followed on after them.
Tabs b. 'Ubayd Allah and Suhayb b. Sinan, took up residence with Khubayb b.
Isaf, brother of the Bana al-Hiirith b. al-Khazraj at al-Sunh. It is also said that
Talha stayed with As'ad b. Zurara."
Ibn Hishm stated, "It was told to me that Aba 'Uthmm al-Nahdi said, 'I
learned that when Suhayb wished to emigrate the polytheists of Quraysh said to
him, "When you came to us you were a poverty-stricken beggar. With us you
grew wealthy and acquired status and now you want to take yourself and your
money away! By God, that won't happen!"
"Suhayb told them, LIf I were to make my money over to you, would you let
me leave?'
"'Yes,' they agreed.
"That information reached the Messenger of God (SAAS), and he commented,
'Suhayh made a profit! Suhayh made a profit!"'
Al-Bayhaqi stated, "The hZ$g Abo 'Abd Allah related to us, by dictation, that
Aba al-'Abbas Isma'il b. 'Ahd Allah b. Muhammad h. Mikal informed him,
quoting 'Abdm al-Ahwzi, quoting Zayd b. al-Juraysh, quoting Ya'qiih b.
Muhammad al-Zuhri, quoting Husayn b. Hudhayfa b. Sayfi b. Suhayb, quoting
his father and uncles, from Sa'id b. al-Musayyab, from Suhayb who said, 'The
Messenger of God (SAAS) said, "I was shown the place of your emigration: a
