Hishim said that his name was 'Uthman b. Wthmzn, but he was named
Shammzs for his good looks and his resemblance to a Shammas of the pre-
Islamic era; Shaqran, freed-man of the Messenger of God (SAAS): al-W~qidi
stated, "He was not awarded any share in the spoils. He was in charge of the captives.
He was given money by everyone who had control over the prisoners and
so he received more than a share of the spoils would otherwise have been."
