Sa'd b. Abii Waqq~~, who was Mxlik b. Uhayb al-Zuhri, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> so-called<br />

'~~~~n.71 , Sa'd b. Mzlik Abii Sahl: al-Waqidi stated that he had made preparations<br />

to go forth but fell sick and died before be had left.<br />

Sawwad b. Zurayq b. Zayd al-Ansari: al-Umawi gave his name as Sawwzd b.<br />

Rizam; Sawwad b. Ghaziyya b. Uhayb al-Balawi; Suwaybit b. Sa'd b. Harmala<br />

al-'Abdari; Suwayd b. Makhshi Aba Makhshi al-Tii)i, ally <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Banii 'Abd<br />

Shams: his name is said to have been Azyad b. Hirnyar.<br />

THE LETTER SHTN.<br />

Shuja' b. Wahb b. Rabi'a al-Asadi; Asad h. Khuzayma, ally <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bana 'Abd<br />

Shams, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original Emigrants. Shammas b. Wthman al-Makhziimi: <strong>Ibn</strong><br />

Hishim said that his name was 'Uthman b. Wthmzn, but he was named<br />

Shammzs for his good looks and his resemblance to a Shammas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pre-<br />

Islamic era; Shaqran, freed-man <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS): al-W~qidi<br />

stated, "He was not awarded any share in <strong>the</strong> spoils. He was in charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> captives.<br />

He was given money <strong>by</strong> everyone who had control over <strong>the</strong> prisoners and<br />

so he received more than a share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spoils would o<strong>the</strong>rwise have been."<br />
