<strong>the</strong>re initially. (<strong>The</strong>y returned) when <strong>the</strong>y heard that <strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists had accepted<br />

Islam and were praying. When <strong>the</strong>y arrived in Mecca, Wthmm b. Mq'iin<br />

among <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y did not find it true that <strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists had accepted Islam, as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had been told. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>n returned to A<strong>by</strong>ssinia, while o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

remained in Mecca. O<strong>the</strong>r Muslims also went to A<strong>by</strong>ssinia at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

second migration. This will be explained hereafter.<br />

Miisa b. Wqba stated, "Jacfar b. Abii Talib was among those who left <strong>the</strong><br />

second time." But <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq's referring to his having gone on <strong>the</strong> &st migration<br />

is very plain, as will be shown. But God knows best.<br />

However, he clearly was in a second group <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> emigrants who went on <strong>the</strong><br />

first migration; he acted as <strong>the</strong>ir spokesman and translator before <strong>the</strong> Negus and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs. We will report this at length.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishnq went on to list those who left in <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> Ja'far, God be<br />

pleased with <strong>the</strong>m all.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were: 'Amr b. Sa'id b. al-'As and his wife Fadma, daughter <strong>of</strong> Safwnn<br />

b. Umayya b. Muhamth b. Shiqq al-Kinni.<br />

And his bro<strong>the</strong>r Kbalid, accompanied <strong>by</strong> his wife Umayna, daughter <strong>of</strong> Khalaf<br />

b. As'ad al-KhuBCi; she bore him Sa'id and Amma, <strong>the</strong> latter ultimately marrying<br />

al-Zubayr <strong>by</strong> whom she gave birth to 'Amr and Khdid.<br />

Also <strong>the</strong>re were 'Abd Allah b. J&sh b. Ri'nb and his bro<strong>the</strong>r Wbayd Allah,<br />

who was accompanied <strong>by</strong> his wife Umm Habiba, daughter <strong>of</strong> Abn Sufynn.<br />

And Qays b. 'Abd All* <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bann Asad b. Khazima along with his wife<br />

Baraka, daughter <strong>of</strong> Yasa, <strong>the</strong> freed-woman <strong>of</strong> Abti Sufyzn.<br />

And Mu'ayqib b. Abii Fahma, a freed-man <strong>of</strong> Sa'id b. &-'A$. <strong>Ibn</strong> Hishzm<br />

stated, "He was <strong>of</strong> (<strong>the</strong> tribe <strong>of</strong>) Daws."<br />

And Abn Mnsa al-Ash'ari, that is 'Abd Allah h. Qays, an ally <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong><br />

Wtba b. Rabi'a; we will discuss this later and also <strong>the</strong> authority.<br />

And Wtba b. Ghazwm, Yazid b. Zam'a b. al-Aswad, 'Amr b. Umayya b.<br />

al-H~rith b. Asad, Tulayb b. Wmayr b. Wahb b. Abn <strong>Kathir</strong> b. 'Abd, Suwaybit<br />

b. Sa'd b. Huraymala and Jahm b. Qays al-'Abdawi, accompanied <strong>by</strong> his wife<br />

Umm Harmala, daughter <strong>of</strong> 'Abd al-Aswad b. Khuzayma, along with his two<br />

sons 'Amr b. Jahm and Khuzayma h. Jahm. Also <strong>the</strong>re was Abn al-Ram b.<br />

Wmayr b. Hshim b. 'Abd Mannf b. 'Abd al-Dw, b. al-Nadr b. al-Hwitb<br />

b. Kalda, 'Amir b. Abn Waqqas, bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Sa'd, and al-Mut@lib b. Azhar b.<br />

'Abd 'Awf al-Zuhri, accompanied <strong>by</strong> his wife Ramla, daughter <strong>of</strong> Abii 'Awf b.<br />

Dubayra, who bore in A<strong>by</strong>ssinia al-Mu~alib's son 'Abd Allzh.<br />

Also <strong>the</strong>re were 'Abd Allah b. Masciid and his bro<strong>the</strong>r Wtba, al-Miqdad b.<br />

al-Aswad, al-Haith b. Khalid b. Sakhr al-Taymi, accompanied <strong>by</strong> his wife<br />

Rayfa, daughter <strong>of</strong> al-Haith b. Jubayla; she bore him <strong>the</strong>re Miisa, 'A'isha,<br />

Zaynab and Fn~ma.<br />

Also <strong>the</strong>re were 'Amr b. Wthmnn b. 'Amr b. Ka'b b. Sa'd b. Taym b. Murra<br />

and Shammns b. Wthman b. al-Sharid al-Makhziimi. He (<strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq) stated that
