said, 'Well <strong>the</strong>n, I and he will die toge<strong>the</strong>r. 1'11 not have <strong>the</strong> womenfolk <strong>of</strong> Mecca<br />

say <strong>of</strong> me that I abandoned my friend because <strong>of</strong> my own will to live!'<br />

"Abn al-Bakhtari spoke <strong>the</strong> following verse as he began to battle<br />

al-Mujadhdhir,<br />

'No free man abandons his comrade until he dies or sees<br />

his way.'<br />

"<strong>The</strong>y fought, and al-Mujadhdhir b. Dhiy%d killed him. On this subject he<br />

spoke <strong>the</strong> verses,<br />

'Should you have not known or forgotten my lineage, be<br />

sure that I descend from Bali,<br />

Men who fight using Yazani spears, striking down <strong>the</strong><br />

high and mighty,<br />

Ei<strong>the</strong>r tell Ahn al-Bakhtari's son that he's an orphan<br />

now, or tell my son <strong>the</strong> same <strong>of</strong> me.<br />

I am he whose lineage is known to he from Bali; I<br />

thrust home my spear so hard it almost folds over.<br />

I slaughter my foe with a sharp Mashrafi blade, racing<br />

to death like a milch-camel to milking,<br />

You will never see Mujadhdhir inventing a lie.'<br />

"A-Mujadhdhir <strong>the</strong>n went to <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) and told him, 'I<br />

swear <strong>by</strong> Him who sent you with <strong>the</strong> truth, I did try to take him prisoner to bring<br />

him to you, hut he insisted on fighting me. So I fought back and killed him."'<br />

Chapter: On <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Umayya b. Khalaf:<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ishzq stated, "Yahy b. 'Abbzd b. 'Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr related to me,<br />

from his fa<strong>the</strong>r, and 'Abd All& b. Abn Bakr and o<strong>the</strong>rs related to me, from 'Abd<br />

al-Ralpnzn b. 'Awf, who said, 'Umayya b. Khalaf had been a friend <strong>of</strong> mine at<br />

Mecca. My name at that time was 'Abd 'Amr, and when I became a Muslim I<br />

renamed myself 'Ahd al-Ralpan. When we met in Mecca, he addressed me <strong>by</strong><br />

saying, "Hey, 'Abd 'Amr, don't you like <strong>the</strong> name your fa<strong>the</strong>r gave you?"<br />

"That's right," I replied. He <strong>the</strong>n said, "Well, I don't know this 'al-Ra!mm'<br />

name; let's give you some name just for you and me that I can call you. You don't<br />

respond to your first name and I can't call you <strong>by</strong> what I don't recognize." When<br />

he addressed me <strong>by</strong> 'Abd 'Amr, I did not respond. So I told him, "Abn 'Mi,<br />

name me whatever you want." "<strong>The</strong>n you can be 'Abd al-Il%h", he said, and I<br />

agreed to this.<br />

"'<strong>The</strong>reafter, when I passed him, he would address me as 'Abd al-Il&, and I<br />

would respond and talk with him.<br />

'"At <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Badr, I passed <strong>by</strong> him as he was standing with his son 'Ali,<br />

holding his hand. I was carrying some coats <strong>of</strong> chain-mail I had got as spoils and<br />

when he saw me he called out, "'Ahd 'Amr!" I made no reply, so he <strong>the</strong>n called
