Regarding the brotherhood established between the Prophet and 'Ali, some scholars deny this and maintain it to be untrue. Their argument is that this brotherhood was only established to bring about closer feelings and ties between these individuals. There was no sense, therefore, in declaring a brotherly state between the Prophet (SAAS) and one of (his) own, nor between two men both of whom were Emigrants, as was the case, according to him, between Hamza and Zayd b. Haritha. Unless the Prophet (SAAS) did not wish to place the interests of 'Ali in the hands of anyone but himself. For he was someone for whom the Messenger of God (SAAS) had made contributions from his youth on, during the lifetime of Abn Talib, as has been told above from Mujzhid and others. That might also be the case with Hamza, who had looked after the interests of their freed-man Zayd b. Haritha, and so established a brotherhood pact with him. But God knows best. The same applies to Ibn Ishaq's reference to the brotherhood between Ja'far and Musdh b. Jabal, which is subject to dispute, as 'Abd al-Malik b. Hish?un observed. For Ja'far b. Abn Talib only arrived at the beginning of 7 AH at the time of the battle of Khaybar, as will be told hereafter. How, therefore, could there have been a tie of brotherhood made between him and Mu$dh b. Jabal immediately following the arrival of the Messenger of God (SAAS) in Medina? Unless, of course, the arrangement was that this would go into effect whenever he did arrive. 4bn Ishaq's statement, "Aba Wbayda and Sa'd b. Mu5dh became brothers," contradicts what Imam Ahmad stated, namely, "It was related to us by 'Abd al-Samad, quoting Hammad, quoting Thnbit, from Anas b. Mgik, that the Messenger of God (SAAS) established a brotherhood pact between Abo CUhayda b. al-Jamb and Aba Talha." Muslim related this also, being the only one to relate this tiom Hajjaj b. al-Shn'ir, from 'Abd al-Samad b. 'Abd al-W%ith. This seems more reliable than what Ibn Ishaq recounted, of such a pact between Aba Wbayda and Sa'd b. Musdh. But God knows best. AI-Bukh%iri's text reads as follows, "Chapter on h o ~ the Prophet ($US), established brotherhood between his Companrons. 'Ahd al-mma b. 'Awf stated, 'The Prophet (SAAS), established a bond of brotherhood between myself and Saw b. al-Rabi' when we came to Medina.'" Aba Juhayfa stated, "The Prophet (SAAS) established brotherhood between SalmZn the Persian and Aba al-Darda'. God be pleased with him." Muhammad b. Ynsuf related to us, quoting Sufym, from Humayd, from Anas, who said, "'Abd al-Ra!nnm b. 'Awf amved and the Prophet (SAAS) established brotherhood between him and Saw b. al-Rabic, the Helper. The latter suggested that he share his family and his property with him. 'Abd al-Rahm replied, 'God bless you in both your family and your wealth. Show me the way to the market.'

The Prophet (SAAS) asked him, 'What's the matter with you, 'Abd al-Rhiin?' He replied, 'I married a woman from among the Helpers.' 'What did you give her as dowry?' he asked. 'The weight of 5 dirhams worth of gold,' he replied. The Prophet (SAAS) responded, 'Well, have a feast, if only with a sheep!'" This is the sole account of this from this line. Al-Bukhm related this also in other places as did Muslim from various lines, from Humayd. Imam Ahmad stated, "'ilffiin related to us, quoting Hammiid, Thiihit and Hamid, from Anas, that 'Abd al-Rahmm h. 'Awf came to Medina and the Messenger of God (SAAS) established a pact of brotherhood between him and Sa'd b. al-Rabic, the Helper. Sacd said to him, 'Now brother, I'm the wealthiest man in Medina. Take a share that appeals to you. I have two wives. Look and see which of them you prefer and I'll divorce her!' "'Ahd al-Rahmm replied, 'May God bless yon in your family and in your wealth. Show me the way to the market.' They did so and he engaged in buying and selling and made a profit. He ended up by bringing back some cottage cheese and cooking fat. Some time thereafter the Messenger of God (SAAS) (saw him) with traces of saffron upon him and asked hi, 'What's the matter with you?' He replied, '0 Messenger of God, I married a woman.' 'What did you give her in dowry?' he asked. 'The weight of 5 dirhams worth of gold,' he replied. 'Well,' he commented, 'have a feast, if only with a sheep!' "'Ahd al-Rahman observed, 'I was in such a state that if I had lifted a single rock I would have hoped to find gold and silver.'" The additional comment given here by al-Bukhitri from 'Ahd al-Rahman seems strange, for the only source given for it was Anas. Unless, of course, Anas was told this by 'Ahd al-RaMn. God knows best. Iman Ahmad stated, "Yazid related to us, that Humayd informed him, from Anas, as follows, 'The Emigrants said, "0 Messenger of God, we've never been to people who are better prepared to give help in hopes of so little or more willing to give from so much. They have spared us such dificulty and shared such comfort with us we're afraid they're the only ones getting rewards." He replied, "No, there's all the great praise you've given them, and you have also prayed to God for them.""' The line of transmission of this hadith is tw-thirds in accord with the criteria for both ~ahih collections. None of the authors of the six canonical books of traditions give this particular line. It is established in the ~ahih collections along a different path. Al-Bukhitri stated, "Al-Hakam b. Nzfifi' informed us, quoting Shu'ayb, quoting Aha al-Zinad, from al-Acraj, from Aba Hurayra, who said, 'The Helpers said, "Divide up the palm trees between us and our brothers." "No," he replied. They said, 'LYo~ recompense us with your hard work, and we will have you share in the fruits." L'We hear and obey," they responded."'
