Since I have been here I have had an op-<br />

portunity <strong>of</strong> hearing <strong>the</strong> great question <strong>of</strong> a<br />

railroad across <strong>the</strong> Desert <strong>to</strong> Suez much dis-<br />

cussed. It would be presumptuous in me <strong>to</strong><br />

venture an opinion <strong>of</strong> my own as <strong>to</strong> its prac-<br />

ticahility, but I can bear full testimony <strong>to</strong> its<br />

in facilitating <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> overl<strong>and</strong> tra-<br />

vellers <strong>to</strong> <strong>and</strong> fi'om India, <strong>and</strong> converting that<br />

which is now <strong>the</strong> most fatiguing part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

journey in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> easiest <strong>and</strong> most agreeable.<br />

It generally happens that <strong>the</strong> two mails meet<br />

here, <strong>the</strong> steamer belonging <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Transit Com-<br />

pany at Alex<strong>and</strong>ria bringing <strong>the</strong> Indian passen-<br />

gers who have l<strong>and</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>re from Southamp<strong>to</strong>n,<br />

<strong>and</strong> depositing <strong>the</strong>m at Cairo, where <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

allowed a very short time <strong>to</strong> enjoy <strong>the</strong>mselves,<br />

after having been s<strong>to</strong>wed away in <strong>the</strong> Nile<br />
